What It All Means

One of the toughest players to tell a story on in 2010, mostly because of all the variables and ups and downs the Tigers had last year, Ramon Santiago was not one of them. He brought to the club exactly what they thought he would – very good defense along with below average offense, but offense good enough that he wouldn’t be a complete hole in the lineup. One encouraging sign saw Santiago raise his walk rate to nearly one walk for every ten at-bats, a promising development for a guy that has obviously never been a power guy, and will make his living when he’s at the plate by getting on base. Of course, the reality is that he really makes his living with his glove, and will continue to do so with a very strong UZR.

What Does the Future Hold

Santiago is under contract already for 2011, and will return to the Tigers as the team’s utility infielder up the middle, barring something unforeseen (trade or injury). Santiago fits that bill perfectly, and will be perfect support for a shortstop whose range and defense is questionable (Jhonny Peralta) and a second base position that is likely going to be relying on a pair of second year players that will be susceptible to ups and downs and periodic struggles.
