What It All Means

While the circumstances were a bit different, the long and short of it is that 2010 was very similar to the previous three seasons for Joel Zumaya. He’s mostly effective in a setup role, except for the fact that he only pitched around 30 games for the season (threw in 31 in 2010). This time around, it was a fractured elbow that occurred in a non-contact manner, on a pitch in Minnesota. That injury over-shadowed a bit of a resurgence for Zumaya, as he had returned to better form last year after some struggles in 2009. The improvement was decidedly noticed with the efficiency of his fastball, which turned in a pitch value of almost 10, as opposed to a -4 in 2009. That was the best he posted since his debut season in 2006, when no one could catch up to the heat he was dealing.

What Does the Future Hold

All indications from the organization are that Zumaya’s rehab is going well, and that he should be ready to go at full speed by the time the season starts. If he’s healthy, Zumaya is one of the most deadly relievers in all of baseball, and with the presence of Joaquin Benoit in addition to closer Jose Valverde, some pressure will be taken off Zumaya to step up as the team’s go to reliever. That being said, health is constantly the issue with him, and it’s hard to predict if he can do that, given his inability do so in every single season since his first one in 2006. If he’s healthy, he makes the Tigers’ bullpen that much better, but the Tigers would likely be foolish to be planning to have Zumaya available for all 162 games in 2011.
