What It All Means

Much like a couple of big name starters for the Tigers, Ryan Perry seemed to struggle early on, head down to Toledo to “figure some things out,” and returned a new pitcher and excelled in the second half of the season. In Perry’s case, the improvement was extreme, as his second half ERA fell well under 3 and helped pull his overall ERA in the mid 3’s, with an FIP just over 4. He also saw a substantial jump in his strikeout-to-walk ratio from the first half to the second half, with a K:BB of 2.78 in the latter half of the year. One other encouraging development was the substantial improvement in his slider, which went from a slightly negative value pitch to one that was decidedly positive.

What Does the Future Hold

It was a year to be encouraged for Perry, who improved in a number of areas, especially after his stint in Toledo. But, there’s a big difference between being a great lights out reliever, and just improving. Now, it’s a matter of continuing that progression to continue to iron out his lingering struggles, and show he can be relied upon in close, big game situations. The Tigers primary reason for signing Joaquin Benoit this off-season was because of the constant uncertainty with the health of Joel Zumaya along with Perry not yet taking the next step in his career. Perry has the arm to be a dominant setup man, but he’ll first have to prove to manager Jim Leyland that he can take the mound, not get rattled, and get tough outs, a confidence he didn’t have in 2010.
