Stay current with all the roster movement and personnel decisions with the TigsTown Transaction Blog. Phil Coke's injury gives another rookie left-hander a chance to make his big league debut, and sets the stage for Andy Oliver to return to Detroit for the first time in 2011.

05/26/11

Re-assigned L.J. Gagnier (RHP) from Erie to Toledo

Re-assigned Zach Samuels (RHP) from Lakeland to Erie

Activated Shawn Teufel (LHP) from the 7-day DL (oblique)

Released Chris Oxspring (RHP)

Released Richard Zumaya (RHP)

Analysis: Gagnier should help fill in the gaps in the Toledo rotation as that squad remains in flux with Andrew Oliver still expected to get the call to Detroit on Saturday.

The prior addition of Jay Voss and the addition of Zach Samuels gives the Seawolves two versatile guys that can fill several roles. There could still be some flux on this roster as the shake-out continues.

Both Oxspring and Zumaya were released at their request. Oxspring is expected to pursue opportunities to pitch in the far east, while Zumaya is expected to head to college and move on with his life away from the game.

Placed Brad Thomas (LHP) on the 7-day DL (elbow)

Recalled Charlie Furbush (LHP) from Toledo

Optioned Brayan Villarreal (RHP) to Toledo

Transferred Carlos Guillen (INF) to the 60-day DL (knee)

Purchased the contract of Enrique Gonzalez (RHP) from Toledo

Re-assigned Ramon Garcia (LHP) from Erie to Toledo

Placed Nate Newman (RHP) on the 7-day DL

Activated Ramon Lebron (RHP) from the 7-day DL (back)

Activated Richard Zumaya (RHP) from the 7-day DL (shoulder) and re-assigned him to West Michigan to EST

Re-assigned Jay Voss (LHP) from Lakeland to Erie

Re-assigned Luis Sanz (RHP) from EST to Lakeland

Placed Jeff Ferrell (RHP) on the 7-day DL (elbow)

Re-assigned Tim Mowry (RHP) from EST to West Michigan

Analysis: The Tigers finally decided it was time to start shaking up the bullpen as they took advantage of Thomas' elbow inflammation to bring up Charlie Furbush and sent Villarreal down for some additional work and brought back Gonzalez.

Furbush has average velocity and a breaking ball that flashes 55 potential, all combined with some funk in his delivery that gives him added deception and effectiveness. Many scouts throughout the industry believe the bullpen may be his best long term role at the big league level. Gonzalez has been working in shorter stints since being sent down, including working as Toledo's closer, which could mean the Tigers plan to try him in the 7th and 8th innings now that he's back in Detroit.

It's good to see Lebron back quickly from some minor back issues, as he's taken well to his new relief role and seems to be mowing through Midwest League hitters, while hitting triple digits on numerous occasions this season. There have been some rumblings out of the organization that Richard Zumaya may be contemplating hanging up his cleats with this recent demotion.

Placed Chris Oxspring (RHP) on the Temporary Inactive List

Activated Jose Ortega (RHP) from the 7-day DL (shoulder)

Analysis: Ortega's shoulder began bothering him late in spring training and it shelved him for the first six weeks of the Triple-A campaign. He began throwing bullpen sessions a couple of weeks ago, and all reports out of Lakeland indicate he's back to pumping mid-90s heat without trouble. If he pitches well with Toledo, he could be on the big league radar later this summer.

Oxspring being placed on the Temporary Inactive List gives creedence to the rumblinbs that the Tigers may be exploring options to allow Oxspring to head back to the Far East to pitch.

Placed Magglio Ordonez (OF) on the 7-day DL

Purchased the contract of Andy Dirks (OF) from Toledo

Re-assigned Deik Scram (OF) from Erie to Toledo

Re-assigned Brent Wyatt (OF) from Lakeland to Erie

Re-assigned James Meador (1B) from EST to Lakeland

Released Billy Alvino (C)

Released Jorge Medina (RHP)

Released Jhosep Pinto (OF)

Withdrew the contract offered to Fernando Chalas (RHP)

Signed Felix Santana (C)

Signed Gregory Hidalgo (INF)

Signed Felix Santana (OF)

Signed Fernando Perez (RHP)

Signed Yoel Espinol (RHP)

Signed Harold Rosario (RHP)

Signed Jose Ovalles (C)

Signed Harold Castro (2B)

Signed David Gonzalez (INF)

Signed Anderson Yance (OF)

Signed Carlos Perez (OF)

Re-assigned Daniel Carranza (OF) from the DSL to VSL

Re-assigned Carlos Alvarado (OF) from the DSL to VSL

Released Darlyn Duran (LHP)

Ryan Enos (OF) retired

Analysis: The Tigers may have finally helped themselves a bit and continue what they started by calling up Scott Sizemore. Dirks has been on fire since the second half of last year and its time to see what he can do in the big leagues.

According to Alvino, the Tigers opted to give him the opportunity to play elsewhere rather than sit in EST; something he was looking for, so the parting of ways was more of a mutual understanding.

The Dominican and Venezuelan signings will be detailed in TigsTown's upcoming season previews for both teams. Keep an eye out for the VSL preview next week and the DSL preview later this month.

Re-assigned Ben Guez (OF) from Erie to Toledo

Re-assigned Bryan Pounds (3B) from Toledo to Erie

Re-assigned Edwin Gomez (OF) from West Michigan to EST

Re-assigned Steven Moya (OF) from EST to West Michigan

Activated Jeff Ferrell (RHP) from the 7-day DL (elbow)

Placed Ramon Lebron (RHP) on the 7-day DL (back)

Released Clay Timpner (OF)

Analysis: The shake-up continues as the organization tries to get some guys in West Michigan that can help win ball games. It was worth a try with the still 19-year old Gomez, but he just isn't ready for this level of competition. One scout that saw him last month said he was "completely lost in every phase of the game." There's still talent in there, but he's a ways away from tapping into that raw potential.

With Moya, 'Caps fans will get to see another extremely raw talent. A monstrous 6-foot-6 outfielder, Moya has tons of natural strength and some of the best raw power in the system. In the past two years he has shown to be extremely unrefined, but Director of Player Development Mike Rojas said this morning that Moya has "made great strides in showing his ability to hit for both average and power." It's not likely to be easy sledding for Moya in full-season ball, but he has the raw talent to possibly help the club.

Guez is no stranger to bouncing around the organization, having played at three levels last year. He heads back to Triple-A with a hot bat in hand, while Bryan Pounds heads back to Erie.

Timpner was released due to his refusal to accept a demotion to Erie upon his return from a quad injury. Guez fills his spot nicely on the roster and alls the Hens to put three hot bats in the outfield with Dirks, Perez, and Guez, while Clete Thomas continues to struggle.

Ferrell's elbow has reportedly cleared up nicely after some soreness sent him to the DL. He should be watched closely as there is some arm effort in his delivery. Lebron's back spasms are nothing of significant concern and he should return around the minimum, which will be good for a power arm that may finally be finding his niche in the bullpen.

05/10/11

Activated Danny Worth (INF) from the 7-day DL (hamstring)

Released Cesar Nicolas (1B/3B)

Re-assigned Ryan Enos (OF) from West Michigan to EST

Signed Ryan Hamme (OF) and assigned him to West Michigan

Analysis: Nicolas' stay in Toledo was brief after he was activated following a 50-game suspension for amphetamines. His release is not unexpected as Bryan Pounds has been hitting well and Ryan Strieby is still a priority player at first, leaving Nicolas with precious little space on the roster.

Worth's getting back to action at a good time, as he could be next in line for an infield job in Detroit if someone falters. Jim Leyland loves his glove and speed, and that could get him back to the big leagues.

Though Enos was hitting better than guys like Edwin Gomez and P.J. Polk, he's the guy that gets shipped out of A-ball when the team needs help, because he's not a priority prospect. This might be the end of the line for him. Hamme was a 31st round pick by the White Sox in 2009 and had been released recently after starting off slow in Kannapolis. He's not a serious prospect, but he might do enough to help the club until guys like Polk and Gomez can get going.

05/04/11

Activated Victor Martinez (C) from the 15-day DL (groin)

Optioned Omir Santos (C) to Toledo

Re-assigned John Murrian (C) from Toledo to Erie

Re-assigned Jeff Kunkel (C) from Erie to Lakeland

Re-assigned Nate Newman (RHP) from Lakeland to West Michigan

Re-assigned Logan Hoch (LHP) from EST to West Michigan

Re-assigned Clemente Mendoza (RHP) from West Michigan to EST

Re-assigned Steve Crnkovich (RHP) from West Michigan to EST

Re-assigned Zach Simons (RHP) from Toledo to Erie

Re-assigned Lester Oliveros (RHP) from Erie to Toledo

Analysis: The move to make room for Martinez is obvious, as Santos was just an emergency option when he went down. Martinez returns after a brief two game stint with Toledo. One scout in attendance at both games said Martinez "looked like the same guy that's hit in the big leagues for years." His return could help boost a struggling Tigers club.

05/02/11

Activated Cory Hamilton (RHP) from the 7-day DL (wrist)

Re-assigned Matt Little (RHP) from Erie to Lakeland

Re-assigned Dan Gentzler (RHP) from Lakeland to West Michigan

Placed Richard Zumaya (RHP) on the 7-day DL (shoulder)

Optioned Will Rhymes (2B) to Toledo

Recalled Scott Sizemore (2B) from Toledo to Detroit

Analysis: Hamilton returning from the DL so quickly is a positive sign as he took a line drive off the wrist in a recent game. Little is a relatively logical choice to be re-assigned, as his flat fastball and fringy secondary stuff combined with poor command was exposed agaisnt more advanced hitters. He still has a chance for success, but he's got some adjustmments to make.

Little arriving in Lakeland made for an easy re-assignment to West Michigan to replace the injury Richard Zumaya. The little brother of injured Tigers reliever Joel, Richard doesn't have near his brothers power stuff, but he has developed into a solid A-ball arm. Gentlzer will be interesting for Whitecaps fans to check out, as he's a novelty with a true submarine delivery.
