Acquired Delmon Young (OF) from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Cole Nelson (LHP) and a PTBNL

Signed Tyler Gibson (OF)

Analysis: Young has been a nice player for the Twins since returning from the DL and he could be a nice boost to the Tigers lineup as soon as tonight. The Tigers have been hampered by injuries to Brennan Boesch and Victor Martinez lately, and Young could help pick up that slack.

Nelson was an intriguing arm from the 2010 draft. The Tigers tweaked his delivery shortly after signing and had him running it up to 95 mph during the fall. There is no word on the PTBNL at this time.

Inking Gibson is a great get by the Tigers, as he is arguably the most talented player in their entire draft class. A premium athlete, Gibson has the potential to disply a power-speed combination as an outfielder.

Placed Carlos Guillen (2B) on 15-day disabled list (sore wrist)

Recalled Will Rhymes (2B) from Toledo

Analysis: Guillen's injury plagued ways continue as he was placed on the disabled list after Saturday's game with a sore wrist, with there being very little discussion or knowledge of the injury. Despite not having a backup catcher as Victor Martinez still isn't healthy enough to play there, the Tigers elected to recall Will Rhymes from Toledo to add another second baseman to the mix.

Signed James McCann (C)

Analysis: The Tigers inked their top pick, catcher James McCann out of Arkansas, almost a full week before the signing deadline, a bit of a rarity for the Tigers. More than likely, it had to do with the fact that McCann signed for only $578,000, or about $100,000 over the slot recommendation, as opposed to the typical signings that were for several hundred thousands over, if not millions.

No word yet on where the Tigers will assign McCann to start his big league career and if that will happen in the 2011 season.

Re-assigned Ryan Robowski (LHP) from Erie to Lakeland

Re-assigned Carlos De Los Santos (2B) from GCL to Lakeland

Signed Chad Smith (RHP)

Re-assigned Carlos De Los Santos (2B) from Lakeland to GCL

Analysis: Robowski has been on the move a lot lately, jumping from Lakeland to Toledo, then down to Erie, and now back down to Lakeland. He has shown good stuff this year and maintained his stock as a potential MLB LOOGY down the line.

De Los Santos was a roster filler in Lakeland, as his skills are not ready for High-A at this time, but as is frequently the case, the Tigers chose to move him across the parking lot rather than disrupt other teams this late in the year.

Smith is a slight surprise signing by the Tigers out of the June draft. He missed much of the college season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April and he will not pitch competitively this season. The Tigers have an eye toward a return to the mound in 2012 for Smith, and they hope he can regain his prior form with a mid-90s fastball out of the bullpen.

Activated Matt Hoffman (LHP) from the 7-day DL (hamstring)

Placed Bruce Rondon (RHP) on the 7-day DL

Placed Nate Newman (RHP) on the 7-day DL

Re-assigned Ryan Woolley (RHP) from Connecticut to West Michigan

Re-assigned Daniel Bennett (RHP) from Connecticut to West Michigan

Analysis: We're strill tracking down the details on the injuries to Rondon and Newman, though Rondon's stuff had still been top notch in a recent outing according to one scout, so the assumption at this time is that the injury is minor.

Woolley and Bennett are both draft picks from June with plenty of college experience. Bennett was the closer for Florida State and is more of a pitchability guy than a raw stuff guy, while Woolley is an unheralded pick that can get up to 94 mph with his fastball.

Signed Brandon Loy (SS)

Analysis: Loy was the Tigers 5th round pick in June and signed for a slightly over-slot bonus of $212,000. He has the potential for a premium glove while questions abound about his offensive potential. He will start in the GCL this week and could see time with Connecticut or High-A Lakeland before the season is done.

Designated David Purcey (LHP) for assignment

Re-assigned Luis Marte (RHP) from Toledo to Erie

Analysis: Purcey has been struggling out of the Tigers bullpen of late, seeing his ERA soar near the double-digit range. His struggles, coupled with the acquisition of Doug Fister and David Pauley spelled the end of his current tenure in Detroit.
