Next up on the player capsule docket, Miguel Cabrera, who again put up outstanding numbers for the club, as he's done every year since being acquired prior to the 2008 season.

Five Numbers That Sum Up The Season

What It All Means

There’s really nothing terribly interesting to say about Miguel Cabrera’s 2011 season – that’s neither good nor bad, it’s just that he’s been a model of consistency the past few years, and 2011 was no different. He hit his 30 home runs and drove in 100, he posted a WAR above 7 which again ranks him in the top ten in baseball, en route to earning his first batting title. He did set a career high in walks with 108, and was only intentionally walked 22 times this season, compared to a league-high 32 in 2010. His defense remained a relative sore spot, especially statistically, as he again posted a negative in the UZR metrics, but even if he’s never a Gold Glove-caliber player at first base, he’s more than fine to be able to stick there for many more years.

What Does the Future Hold

The only question mark in Cabrera’s future revolves around whether he will hit clean-up again in 2012, or if the playoff shift ends up being permanent, and they’ll slide Cabrera up into the three slot, with Victor Martinez moving into the clean-up role. Beyond that, Cabrera will play every day and will be turning 29, the magic sweet spot for many players to typically reach their peak.

Contract Status

Cabrera is in the fifth year of the eight-year deal that he signed when he came to Detroit, and will be under contract with the Tigers at least through 2015. In 2012, he will receive $21 million.
