Magglio Ordonez has had an incredible run with the Tigers, highlighted by a number of outstanding seasons. However, 2011 was not a good year from Ordonez, and at his age, it's questionable how much is left in the tank for the right fielder.

What It All Means

It was a very rough season for the aging Ordonez. After a comeback 2010 season, the Tigers were optimistic that Ordonez would still hit for a good average in the middle of the lineup, be a patient hitter, and hit for some power, though obviously not as much as he had in his prime. Instead, his average was only mediocre, his walk rate wasn’t great, and his power was closer to that of a light-hitting shortstop than someone manning the power-position right field every day. His offense all combined to result in a very below average profile. His defense was never his calling card, but reached extreme levels of bad, with a UZR/150 of -20, the worst of his career.

What Does the Future Hold

Whether or not Ordonez plays in 2012 still remains to be seen, however if he does, it will not be with the Tigers. The aging right fielder will be 38 by the time players report for spring training in February, and after two rough seasons in the last three (the lone exception being 2010, coincidentally a contract year), it remains to be seen how much exactly Ordonez still has left in the gas tank. Ordonez has had an outstanding career, with over 2,000 hits and nearly 300 home runs, but the time might be coming for him to hang up the cleats.

Contract Status

A one-year, $10 million contract had been signed for 2011. The Tigers did not offer him arbitration, and there is no expectation that the Tigers will attempt to re-sign him for 2012.
