With the season wrapped up, it's time once again to start handing out the hardware. The GCL Tigers had plenty of talent and plenty of candidates - who came out with the pitcher and player of the year awards?

With the signing deadline for new draft picks moved up, the Gulf Coast League Tigers had several more legitimate prospects on the roster this year, none more impressive than third round pick Austin Schotts out of Centennial High School (TX). Schotts got off to a blazing start, hitting over .380 well into his debut season as a professional, and then he dislocated his finger and was forced to miss some time. After coming back from his injury, Schotts cooled off but his overall numbers were still extremely strong. In 40 games for the GCL club, Schotts hit .310 with 12 walks and 41 strikeouts while slugging eleven doubles, a triple and three home runs. He topped it all off by swiping 15 bases in 19 attempts. At the conclusion of the GCL season the Tigers sent Schotts across the parking lot to the High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers for a final test where he picked up a hit and a stolen base in two games.

GCL 1-2 7 / 7 28.1 1.91 31 / 10 .149

Schotts wasn’t the only high-round pick on the GCL roster this summer as second round pick Jake Thompson had an outstanding debut before being shut down after a healthy spring and summer workload. The 18-year old Thompson started seven games for the Tigers, picking up the win in just one of them, but posting a 1.91 ERA in the process. In 28 1/3 innings he allowed only 14 hits and ten walks while fanning 31 opposing batters. He showed excellent polish and poise for a teenager, causing one scout to suggest he could have pitched for the Flying Tigers during their playoff push. Thompson’s WHIP of 0.85 ranked 12th in the league but was third among pitchers that spend most of their time in the starting rotation.
