Four games have been played in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. And the Venezuelan…
After the game, manager Jim Leyland was asked about how he could prevent a repeat of 2006, when the team sat idle for a week after winning the ALCS, and then stumbled out of the gate and never regained their footing as they fell in five games to the Cardinals. Leyland responded, stating, "We have a plan in place that we haven't talked to anybody about, we didn't want to put the cart before the horse. We do have a plan. I'm not going to disclose it now, but we won't be sitting around for five, six days like we did last time."
Shortly after that, the plan seemed to be clear, as a number of minor league players got their marching orders to head to Detroit, including a number of those that were participating in the Tigers' Fall Instructional League, which wrapped up on Thursday.
Those players included left-hander Joe Rogers, right-handers Slade Smith and Hudson Randall, third baseman Jason King, infielder Devon Travis, and outfielder Jeff McVaney. Jim's son Patrick is also in town for the playoffs, and is a likely candidate to participate. It's also likely that a number of players that were left off the postseason roster thus far but spent time with the big league club will be around as well, including Brennan Boesch and Brayan Villarreal.
In addition to the players, it appears many coaches and trainers are en route to Detroit as well, potentially to add to the full effect
As of yet, the Tigers haven't released plans of formal or informal games, practice schedules, or anything else, and it's entirely possible they'll keep those plans under wrap. However, it's clear that the Tigers are not going to be sitting and waiting to find out their opponent.
Hopefully they'll take some PFP, too.
UPDATE: Leyland confirmed to ESPN radio that the Tigers are bringing much of the Fall Ball team to Detroit to hold scrimmages on Sunday and Monday.
