Cubs April 11 Minor League Recap

Tough day for the Cubs minor leagues as Iowa (1-7), Tennessee (2-5) and Daytona (3-4) all lost while Kane County (2-5) was rained out.

Clearwater 12, Daytona 2

Clearwater continued to tattoo Daytona pitching knocking out 15 hits, including four homers, to sweep the Cubs in the series. The Threshers had 26 runs and 33 hits in the final two-games of the series.

Scoring Recap:The Threshers hit two homers and added a RBI double in the third for an early 4-0 lead. Daytona got on the board in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Chad Noble and Micah Gibbs, who was thrown out at third going for a triple. Clearwater hit two more long balls in the sixth, both solo shots, for a 6-1 lead. Dustin Geiger ripped an RBI double in the sixth, scoring Stephen Bruno, but the Threshers got the run back with a RBI double of their own in the seventh. Clearwater added five runs in the ninth.

Pitching Recap: Starling Peralta pitched 4.1 innings of one hit ball in his first start, his second wasn't as successful. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed four homers in six innings and ended his night yielding seven hits and six runs with 7 Ks. RH reliever Yeiper Castillo threw two innings of decent relief allowing a run on a hit and one walk with a strikeout but ran out of gas of gas in the ninth, giving up six hits and five runs.

Cubs Notes: Tim Saunders missed his second straight game after being injured diving for a ball on Tuesday night in centerfield…….Javier Baez is still looking to find his groove in the FSL. He's hitting just .133 with one walk and 12 Ks in 30 AB

Round Rock 2, Iowa 0

Round Rock pitching held Iowa to just three hits spoiling a good outing by Iowa's Brook Raley.

Scoring Recap: Round Rock got a double and a RBI single with two outs in the first and then took advantage of a Brooks Raley's throwing error in the third for the only runs of the game. The Cubs had no answer for LHP Brad Mills, who allowed two hits in seven innings. No Cub reached third base.

Pitching Recap: Brooks Raley needs to keep the ball down to be effective, when he doesn't, he's getting hit hard. After giving up seven hits and four run in four innings in his first start, the left-hander turned in a quality start (7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 7K) but was still tagged with the loss throwing 92 pitches. Jensen Lewis pitched a scoreless eighth, his first of the year in three outings.

Chattanooga 6, Tennessee 3

The Lookouts used a two-run homer in the top of the sixth for their second straight win at Smokies Park.

Scoring Recap: Christian Villanueva put the Smokies up 1-0 in the second on a RBI double, scoring Justin Bour, who walked. The Lookouts tied it up in the fourth on a single, fielder's choice, wild pitch, and a two-out single by winning pitcher Chris Reed. A wild pitch on strike three to Villanueva extended the bottom of the fourth and the Smokies followed with singles by Johermyn Chavez and Jair Fernandez scoring Villanueva for a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice fly tied the game in the fifth and Chattanooga added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Dashenko Ricardo. Two insurance runs came across in the seventh on three hits and a walk. Arismendy Alcantara manufactured a run for the Smokies in the eighth with a single and a stolen base. He reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Justin Bour's sacrifice fly.

Pitching Recap: Alberto Cabrera dropped to 1-1 on the season allowing a two-run homer in the sixth that broke a 2-2 tie. Cabrera, 24, threw 86 pitches in six innings allowing eight hits, four walks and four earned runs. The right-hander has 14 Ks in 12 innings this season. Cabrera is back to the starter's role after appearing in 61 games in relief last year, including 25 with Chicago. Marcus Hatley gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in the seventh but pitched a perfect eighth. Brian Schlitter worked the ninth allowing a hit with 1K.

Kane County

The game between Kane County and Wisconsin was canceled due to rain. There is a forecast of snow for Appleton so they may not play tomorrow. A doubleheader is set to begin tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. CST.
