Felix Pena, pictured, tossed six shutout innings as Kane County swept a twin bill from Burlington. Iowa and Tennessee got beat and Daytona’s game was suspended.

Kane County 2, Burlington 1—10 Innings; Kane County 4, Burlington 1

Kane County (16-15) held Burlington (11-18) to two runs and seven hits in the twin-bill and Rock Shoulders hit his seventh homer of the season.

GAME 1

At the Plate: The Cougars got on the board in the fifth as Bijan Rademacher singled, went to second on Yaniel Cabezas’ sacrifice bunt, and scored on Marco Hernandez’s single. Rademacher got his second single of the game with one out in the tenth and took third on a single by Cabezas. With two out, Oliver Zapata delivered the game-winning single. The Cougars got eight hits, all singles and drew two walks.

Cougars Lineup: Zapata CF (1-4 RBI BB), Amaya 2B (0-5), Vogelbach 3B (1-4), Candelario 3B (1-4), Shoulders LF (0-3 BB), Escobar DH (0-4), Rademacher RF (2-4 2R), Cabezas C (1-3 SAC), Hernandez SS (2-4 RBI).

On the Mound: RHP Tayler Scott (1-1 3.48 ERA) took the mound for his sixth start and pitched into the sixth getting a no-decision (5.1 IP 4H 1ER 3BB 6K). The right-hander was cruising along until the sixth when he allowed the first homer of his pro career, snapping a streak of 105.1 innings. Scott retired nine straight at one point and got eight ground ball outs. With runners on first and third in the sixth, the Cougars went to RHP Stephen Perakslis (0-2 5.52), who threw out a runner at home on a come backer and then got a ground out to end the threat. Perakslis added a scoreless seventh. LHP Nathan Dorris (1-0 1.88) earned his first Midwest League win working two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts. Ian Dickson (1-1 6.41) put the Bees down in the tenth after allowing a runner to get to second for his first save of the season.

GAME 2

At the Plate: Rock Shoulders and Bijan Rademacher hit homers in the eighth as the Cougars swept the twin-bill. The Cougars were no-hit for five innings but got a pair of singles and took advantage of two errors for two runs in the sixth.

Cougars Lineup: Chen LF (0-4), Hernandez SS (0-2 BB), Vogelbach DH (0-1 2BB), Candelario 3B (0-3), Shoulders 1B (1-3 HR RBI), Contreras C (0-2), Rademacher RF (1-3 HR), Bote 2B (1-2 R BB), Zapata CF (1-2 R BB).

On the Mound: Felix Pena (2-0) continued to be Kane County’s best pitcher in 2013 as the right-hander fired six scoreless innings lowering his ERA to 2.23. He only allowed two hits but walked five and fanned six. Eduardo Orozco loaded the bases in the seventh but got out of the inning for his second save.

Cougar Notes: The Cougars are now 5-4 in extra inning games…...Carlos Escobar made his first start of the season in Game 1 going 0-4 as the DH.

Birmingham 5, Tennessee 4

Birmingham (24-10) ran their winning streak to 11 games as they defeated Tennessee (15-18), who lost their 7th straight.

At the Plate: The Smokies took the lead in the first on Ty Wright’s sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Szczur, who walked, stole second, and took third on Arismendy Alcantara’s sacrifice bunt. Rubi Silva whacked smacked his sixth homer of the season over the left-centerfield fence in the fourth. Elliot Soto and Szczur both drew bases loaded walks to cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth but the Barons got the final out. Szczur had two hits and Torreyes was on base three times with a hit and two walks.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur CF (2-3 R RBI 2BB), Torreyes 2B (1-3 2BB), Alcantara SS (0-3 SAC), Wright LF (1-3 R BB), Villanueva DH (2-3), Silva RF (1-4 2R HR RBI), Torres 1B (0-4), Lopez C (0-3 BB), Soto 3B (0-2 RBI 2BB).

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (3-3 4.17 ERA) had his second straight tough outing allowing eight hits, four walks, and two homers in 4.1 innings. He was charged with five earned runs and threw 104 pitches, a season-high. The lefty was named the Cubs minor league pitcher of the month in April. Brain Schlittter (0-1 0.00) made his 11th straight appearance without allowing an earned run tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and fanned two. Frank Batista (1-1 2.93) held the Barons in check for two innings, yielding a hit while striking out two.

Smokies Notes: Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza will make his second rehab start in AA as he takes the mound Saturday at Smokies Park against Birmingham. Garza is expected to throw around 75 pitches, according to Smokies radio broadcaster Mick Gillisipie.

Colorado Springs11, Iowa 1

Colorado Springs (20-13) bashed out 14 hits, six for extra bases, as the Sky Sox whipped Iowa (12-20).

At the Plate: Iowa’s only run of the game came in the seventh when Darnell McDonald doubled and scored on Logan Watkins’ double. They had three other singles.

Cubs Lineup: Watkins 2B (1-4 2B RBI), Jackson (0-4), Vitters 3B (0-3), Murphy SS (1-3), Lillibridge 1B (1-4), Sappelt (0-4), McDoanld RF (1-4 R 2B), Boscan C (0-3 BB), Raley P (1-1), Stewart PH (0-1), Negrin P (0-1), Bogusevic CF (0-1)

On the Mound: LHP Brooks Raley (3-3 5.30 ERA) got hit hard Friday night allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs in four innings. He fanned four but walked three and allowed a homer in his 85-pitch outing. Yoanner Negrin (0-1 2.25 ERA) fanned five in three innings allowing a hit and an unearned run. Negrin has now struckout 23 in 18 IP. RHP Rafael Dolis, who was sent down to Iowa from Chicago, surrendered a pair of runs in the eighth on two hits and a walk.

Cubs Notes: The Cubs traded Iowa IF Alberto Gonzalez to the New York Yankees for cash considerations or a player to be named later. RHP Rafael Dolis was sent back to Iowa to make room on the roster for RHP Kyjui Fujikawa, who came off the DL and joined Chicago in Washington. RHP Kameron Loe cleared waivers and declared for free agency instead of being assigned to Iowa.

Daytona 0, Dunedin 0—Suspended

The game was suspended in the bottom of the third and will be resumed on Saturday and completed as a nine-inning game. A 7-inning game will follow. Yeiper Castillo retired all nine of the hitter he faced before the game was called. Castillo has now pitched 18-consecutive scoreless innings for Daytona, allowing only five hits, while walking two and striking out 22. Javier Baez and John Andreoli had singles for Daytona.
