Transaction Blog: Machado Activated to LFT

Stay current with all the roster movement and personnel decisions with the TigsTown Transaction Blog. Dixon Machado was activated from the disabled list, but sent to Lakeland rather than Erie. Plus, two notable minor league arms have been placed on the disabled list, including one who was looked at as a possible option in Detroit this year.

Activated Dixon Machado (SS) from Erie's 7-day disabled list and transferred to Lakeland

Transferred Harold Castro (2B) from Lakeland to extended spring training

Optioned Evan Reed (RHP) to Toledo

Recalled Luke Putkonen (RHP) from Toledo

Placed Casey Crosby (LHP) on Toledo's 7-day disabled list

Placed Brandon Douglas (2B) on Toledo's 7-day disabled list

Transferred Michael Morrison (RHP) from Erie to Toledo

Transferred Corey Jones (2B) from Erie to Toledo

Transferred Ryan Robowski (LHP) from Lakeland to Erie

Assigned Matt Davenport (RHP) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Placed Montreal Robertson (RHP) on West Michigan's 7-day disabled list with an elbow strain

Assigned Guido Knudson (RHP) to West Michigan from extended spring training

Analysis:

After nearly two months on the disabled list, Machado returns to active play, but does so in Lakeland rather than Erie, as Eugenio Suarez has taken his spot there, and the Tigers appear intent on giving Suarez an extended chance to succeed, even if he has just one hit over his last six games.

Two noteworthy injuries have impacted a couple of arms in the system, with Crosby and Robertson to the disabled list. Crosby is no stranger to the DL, as he's had injury issues constantly throughout his minor league career, the latest setback, regardless of severity, could again revive talk that a move to the bullpen is necessary. Robertson on the other hand has been hit or miss for the Whitecaps, walking more than he's struck out, but posting one outing of five no-hit innings, and another yielding a run in seven innings. The initial diagnosis doesn't appear to be serious, but any injury involving the elbow for a pitcher should be concerning.

Optioned Al Alburquerque (RHP) to Toledo

Recalled Evan Reed (RHP) from Toledo

Analysis:

Alburquerque's struggles as of late have been mounting, allowing an earned run in each of his last three appearances, including taking the loss for yielding the go-ahead run to Houston in Wednesday's match-up. Alburquerque had looked excellent as recently as a few weeks ago, with three straight appearances of no runs allowed with ten struck out and no walks, but things took a turn for the worse shortly after that.

Reed was a valuable middle reliever for the Mud Hens thus far this season, posting a 3.00 ERA in 14 games, with 28 strikeouts to just seven walks. Reed features a low to mid 90s fastball with a slider that can be solid at times but has lacked consistency in the past. If his command is on, he could be a very valuable 7th inning arm for the team, but he's also now on his third organization at 27 years of age, so his prospect status is a bit questionable.

Placed Austin Jackson (CF) on Detroit's 15-day disabled list retroactive to 5/12 with a pulled leftt hamstring

Recalled Avisail Garcia (OF) from Toledo

Activated Phil Coke (LHP) from Detroit's 15-day disabled list

Optioned Luke Putkonen (RHP) to Toledo

Transferred Robbie Weinhardt (RHP) from Toledo to Erie

Transferred Hudson Randall (RHP) from West Michigan to Lakeland

Analysis:

The injury to Jackson came as a surprise to many, as manager Jim Leyland had only mentioned it as a minor issue and that he could have played when he first sat on Sunday. The diagnosis ended up worse, and he'll be sidelined for at least two weeks. Given the timing and the relative struggles of most of the rest of the Toledo outfield, hot-hitting prospect Avisail Garcia will return to Detroit, where he'll share time in left field and center field with Andy Dirks and Don Kelly. Garcia is best in right field, but has the athleticism to hold his own in center.

Assigned Harold Castro (2B) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Assigned Drew Longley (C ) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Assigned Jordan Dean (IF) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Activated Drew VerHagen (RHP) from Lakeland's 7-day disabled list

Transferred Charlie Gillies (RHP) from Lakeland to West Michigan

Transferred Hudson Randall (RHP) from West Michigan to Lakeland

Analysis:

One of the big name prospects that started the season in extended spring training will get his first taste of full-season ball, as second baseman Harold Castro will debut with Lakeland. The Flying Tigers have been hit hard by injuries, including impacting some of their best hitters, so after a string of losses hindered by low offensive production, the Tigers may be trying to challenge a young but talented hitter to see if he can raise his game, and also provide a spark for the team, similar to what the organization did a few years ago with Daniel Fields going from extended spring straight to Lakeland and skipping West Michigan entirely.

Optioned Bruce Rondon (RHP) to Toledo

Recalled Luke Putkonen (RHP) from Toledo

Released John Lindsey (1B)

Transferred Ramon Cabrera (C ) from Erie to Toledo

Transferred Eugenio Suarez (SS) from Lakeland to Erie

Placed John Murrian (C ) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list retroactive to 5/2

Assigned Drew Longley (C ) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Analysis:

The big news here is that after a strong start, Suarez is making the aggressive move up to Erie from Lakeland. This also isn't a great sign for Dixon Machado, who was expected to be in Erie to start the season, but has been slowed by injury. With the Suarez move, it appears unlikely Machado will be returning to action soon.

Recalled Avisail Garcia (OF) from rehab assignment and optioned to Toledo

Placed Phil Coke (LHP) on Detroit 15-day disabled list with a strained groin, retroactive to 4/26

Recalled Jose Ortega (RHP) from Toledo

Analysis:

Two big moves originating from the big league club, starting with the decision to option Garcia to Toledo, showing the Tigers following through on the plan to get him everyday at bats in the minors for further development. Andy Dirks heating up and Matt Tuisasospo's strong start likely provided enough reassurance to continue on the path they're on.

In the bullpen, the Tigers were forced to put Coke on the disabled list after he couldn't quite get over the hump from his muscle strain. Ortega meanwhile had been excellent in Toledo, not allowing an earned run over ten appearances, spanning 14 innings. He also struck out 19 while walking seven.

Transferred Derek Hankins (RHP) from Erie to Toledo

Transferred Robbie Weinhardt (RHP) from Erie to Toledo

Placed Pat Misch (LHP) on Toledo's 7-day disabled list retroactive to 4/25

Signed Blaine Hardy (LHP) and assigned him to Erie

Placed Kevin Eichhorn (RHP) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list retroactive to 4/26

Placed Drew VerHagen (RHP) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list retroactive to 4/24

Assigned Charles Gillies (RHP) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Assigned Jesus Ustariz (1B) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Assigned Patrick Leyland (C ) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Analysis:

Lots of catching up on moves here, with a number of players to the disabled list in addition to being transferred around due to those injuries. Again, the Lakeland team has been bit by the injury bug as two more members of the rotation hit the disabled list, in addition to already losing some of the star members of the team.

Purchased contract of Jose Valverde (RHP) from Lakeland

Designated Duane Below (LHP) for assignment

Optioned Brayan Villarreal (RHP) to Toledo

Transferred Mike Hernandez (OF) from West Michigan to Lakeland

Assigned Zach Kirksey (OF) to West Michigan from extended spring training

Placed Dean Green (1B/DH) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list

Analysis:

The decision to add Valverde straight to the big league club from Lakeland came as a surprise, but the Tigers clearly desire a reliable closer, and after Phil Coke and Joaquin Benoit struggled, the Tigers elected to go straight to Valverde and see how the former closer does after showing good velocity and control of his fastball in Lakeland. He received a contract valued at around $2 million with an additional $3 million in incentives. The decision to designate Below is based in the hope that he will be the one most likely to make it through waivers and accept the outright assignment to Toledo.

And yet again, the Flying Tigers injury challenges continue, with Dean Green the latest impacted. To try and compensate for the lost offense, they moved Hernandez up from West Michigan.

Called up Bruce Rondon (RHP) from Toledo

Placed Octavio Dotel (RHP) on 15-day disabled list (elbow inflammation), retroactive to 4/20

Activated Jeff Holm (1B/OF) from 7-day disabled list in West Michigan

Released Matt Perry (3B)

Analysis:

After 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, the Tigers have done arguably what they should have done 4 weeks ago and placed Rondon in the big league bullpen in a middle relief. Rondon was very good again against Triple-A competition, allowing just five singles (one of which a bunt single from Billy Hamilton), with nine strikeouts and just two walks. Some additional development is still needed on his secondary pitches and with his control, but he'll be best serve to make that growth in Detroit against big league competition.

Dotel clearly hadn't been right for a little while now, and getting him some extended rest will be beneficial to all parties.

04/21/13

Placed Danny Worth (SS) on Toledo's 7-day disabled list retroactive to 4/18

Transferred Brandon Douglas (2B) from Erie to Toledo

Transferred Jose Valverde from Toledo to Lakeland as of 4/19

Assigned Zach Kirksey (OF) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Transferred Zach Maggard (C ) from Lakeland to Erie

Assigned Luis Sanz (C ) to Lakeland from extended spring training

Analysis:

Aside from the roster juggling, the big news here is the move to place Worth on the disabled list after injuring his heel in a game earlier this week. Those looking for a replacement for Ramon Santiago in Detroit will have to wait for Worth to heal, as unless they thought Hernan Perez was ready (he's not), he's the only minor league infielder that is also on the 40-man roster.

Placed Tommy Collier (RHP) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list

Transferred Slade Smith (RHP) from West Michigan to Lakeland

Transferred Logan Ehlers (LHP) from extended spring training to West Michigan

Placed Joe Rogers (LHP) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list

Transferred Nick Avila (RHP) from extended spring training to Lakeland

Analysis:

The injury to Collier necessitates the usual domino effect. No word on Collier's injury, but given the decision to break up the West Michigan rotation so early in the season, this appears to be a move made for an extended period of time - a short term injury that would result in a missed start likely would have meant a spot start from someone in EST instead. No word yet on who will replace Smith in West Michigan.

04/16/13

Placed Jeff Holm (1B/OF) on West Michigan's 7-day disabled list (sprained left ankle)

Transferred David Gonzalez (SS) from extended spring training to West Michigan

Analysis:

At this point in time, losing Holm is a big blow to the Whitecaps offense, as he was leading the way at the plate with a 1.072 OPS. The upside is that the injury doesn't appear to be serious and Holm should return within a couple of weeks.

Gonzalez might get some playing time on the call-up, as Jared Reaves has hit just .226 with six errors in ten games as the ‘Caps everyday shortstop thus far.

04/12/13

Placed Steven Moya (OF) on 7-day disabled list (arm)

Transferred Zach Kirksey (OF) from extended spring training to Lakeland

Placed Luis Marte (RHP) on 7-day disabled list (shoulder)

Transferred Jose Valverde (RHP) from extended spring training to Toledo (UPDATE: Move reversed, Valverde returned to extended spring training)

Activated Ramon Garcia (LHP) from Erie inactive list and transferred to Toledo

Analysis:

The news about Moya is very concerning, as the organization is being very quiet after had to be lifted from a game after taking a hard fall in the outfield. Zach Kirksey will take his spot, but for a player that missed much of last season with an elbow injury, concern about Moya is warranted.

Meanwhile, Marte's shoulder issue (just a sore shoulder, for now), opens up the roster spot for Valverde, however, he won't immediately join the Mud Hens. After a side session on Wednesday, Valverde is scheduled to throw in an extended spring training game on Friday.

Garcia will fill the roster spot in the meantime.
