Cubs August 26 Minor League Recap

Matt Loosen gets win as Smokies clinch.

Tennessee clinched a playoff berth Monday night beating Mobile, winning the second half North Division title of the Southern League. SS Javier Baez blasted his 35th homer out of Smokies Park and finished the night with 4 RBI while RHP Matt Loosen tossed seven shutout innings. Boise rallied for three runs in the 7th and beat Hillsboro to move into a tie for first with the Hops in the NWL.

AAA—Iowa 2, Omaha 1

Yoanner Negrin pitched a complete game as Iowa (62-75) kept its playoff hopes alive with a win over Omaha (67-70)

At the Plate: Ty Wright (.275/.339/.436) had three hits, including a pair of doubles and the go-ahead RBI while Edgar Gonzalez (.254/.289/.408) drove in the tying run in the third with a single. Jae-Hoon Ha (.248/.291/.376) added two singles and scored once while Mike Olt (.194/.294/.376) walked three times.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (4-6 4.06) tossed the first complete game of his pro career as the 29-year-old Cuban scattered six hits and and a walk allowing a run in the first. He has struggled as a starter but put it all together Monday night, fanning six in his 105-pitch gem.

AA—Tennessee 6, Mobile 0

Tennessee clinched the second half title winning the Southern League North with a shutout over Mobile. The Smokies will face Birmingham, the White Sox affiliate, for the North Division Championship.

At the Plate: Only fitting Javier Baez (.308/.360/.656) would have a big night when Tennessee clinched as the 20-year-old hit his 35th homer of the year, 18th in AA, and knocked in four runs. Baez had a RBI single in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the third. His two-run blast in the seventh left Smokies Park, traveling 415 feet to deep let field. Christian Villanueva (.260/.315/.455) hit his Southern League leading 40th double and scored in the sixth, and added a sac fly, his 67th RBI. Matt Szczur (.280/.349/.369) had two singles and scored twice while John Andreoli (.285/.348/.398) was on base three times with two walks and a hit. Jonathan Mota (.270/.342/.402) added a two-out RBI double in the sixth.

On the Mound: Matthew Loosen (2-3 6.53) picked a good time for his best career AA game as the right-hander tossed seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. He allowed three hits and walked three, throwing 101 pitches. Loosen started the season in AA but after a tough start was sent back to Daytona were he regained his form, including tossing a no-hitter. Since returning to Tennessee, he's struggled with his command going 0-1 with a 7.08 ERA with 17 BB in 20.1 IP......Armando Rivero (0-1 1.50) worked a 1-2-3 eighth with a punchout and Frank Batista (3-3 2.69) got the final three outs to start the celebration.

High A—Daytona 2, Dunedin 0—Suspended in top of 4th rain

With Daytona leading 2-0 the game was suspended in the top of the fourth with two outs.

At the Plate: Pin-Chieh Chen's two-run single in the bottom of the third scored Chadd Krist and Elliot Soto for the only two runs of the game before the second rain delay suspended play. It was Chen's second hit of the game.

On the Mound: Pierce Johnson worked three innings before the first rain delay ended his night. He allowed two hits and fanned three.

Cubs Notes: The game will be completed tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. EST and the second game of the DH will be the completion of the suspended game (0-0 after 1 inning). Both games will be seven innings.

Low A—Wisconsin 4, Kane County 2

Wisconsin (58-70) beat Kane County (52-76) for the second straight day.

At the Plate: Olive Zapata (.246/.323/.377) and Reggie Golden (.219/.271/.370) knocked in runs in the second but that would be the only runs the Cougars would score. Wilson Contreras (.250/.317/.435) went 3-4 while Marco Hernandez (.251/.286/.335) and Zapata had two hits each. Kane County was 1-8 with RISP.

On the Mound: James Pugliese (0-1 5.73 ERA) went six innings allowing three runs on six hits. The right-hander fanned four in his second start in the MWL, committing a balk in the sixth with a runner on third and the game tied at 2-2. Pugliese, 21, worked a new delivery during extended spring training and started 11 games in Boise going 4-3 with a 2.32 ERA. Andrew McKirahan (2-0 2.95) worked around a hit and a walk in a scoreless seventh and Brian Smith (2-4 4.45) allowed a run on two hits in the eighth.

Short-Season—Boise 4, HIllsboro 3,

Boise rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to beat Hillsboro in a rain soaked game. The win moves the hawks back into a tie of rfirst place with Hillsboro.

At the Plate: The only run for the Hawks in the first six innings was a solo homer by Kevin Encarnacion (.354/.416/.692) following a nearly one hour rain delay. In the 7th, Boise loaded the bases on two walks and hit batter, and Shawon Dunston (291/.384/.366) followed with a RBI single. David Bote (.250/.336/.377) then hit a grounder to third and a throwing error allowed the tying and winning runs to score. Carlos Penalver (.259/.337/.356) was 2-2 and walked twice.

On the Mound: Jose Rosario (2-0 3.00 ERA) went three innings before the game was delayed an hour by rain. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.....Jasvir Rakkar (4-1 3.63) earned the win with a career-high six strikeouts in three scoreless innings. Loiger Padron (2-3 5.00) held the Hops hitless for two frames and Eduardo Orozco (0-1 4.50) struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

A dust storm and rain canceled Monday night's game.
