Daily Smoko: Tigers 7 Dodgers 6

It was a late and long affair in Los Angeles, but the Tigers continued to grind and earned their first road victor of the season against a formidable Dodgers team. Victor Martinez came through with the big hit. Staff writer Nick Shlain fought sleep deprivation in his favorite chair.

Well, that sure was a Tigers game. It had gutty pitching—from both starter Anibal Sanchez and Drew Smyly—timely hitting, and a complete bullpen meltdown. Sounds like them and somehow they even managed to win the game with even more timely hitting. This time it was a home run by Victor Martinez in extra innings. It came on a 96 mph cutter inside from Kenley Jansen, who Victor owns now (but unfortunately we can't just take him home with us). Al Alburquerque saved the game in the 10th. It was nice to get a split in Los Angeles.

News and Notes

  • Martinez also caught Dee Gordon stealing in the first inning on a pitchout. Maybe he's found the fountain of youth or something, but Victor just looks great in every way right now. Keep it up, big friend.

  • Victor got an error for a throw later in the first, but I actually kind of think Alex Gonzalez could've kept it in front of him instead of booting it, but who knows? It wasn't a great throw, but Gonzalez hasn't impressed Tigers fans so far in the field.

  • After throwing roughly 500 pitches in the first two innings Anibal settled down and somehow made it through five innings while allowing three runs (one earned), six hits, and a walk. He struck out six. Not a bad start.

  • Nick Castellanos hit his first big league home run, which was fun. It came on a 93 mph two-seam fastball out over the plate and was a bomb to dead center. I assume they call it that because he killed center. This baby was hit so hard the center from the FX show The Americans knows about it and that show takes place in the 80's. Seriously, though, good stuff from Casty so far at the plate this season. Keep it up.

  • The Tigers scored their sixth run because of the aggressive play on the bases by Ian Kinsler. After leading off the seventh with a single, Kinsler broke for second base immediately after seeing a wild pitch from Jamey Wright hit the dirt. Catcher Tim Federowicz then threw wildly to second and Kinsler took third. He later scored on an Austin Jackson sacrifice fly giving the Tigers a 6-3 lead, which they would need because...

  • Crazy stuff happened in the bottom of the ninth. Joe Nathan comes on to try to get his second save as a Tiger and promptly allows the first four men in the inning to reach base. Homer. Walk. Walk. Single. I guess it was better than if the order was reversed, but it's hard to be happy with Nathan right now. He was supposed to bring some semblence of stability to this bullpen and instead he's been a gascan. It's early and Nathan has said he's going through a "dead arm" phase right now, but he needs to turn this around fast.

  • Favorite Rod and Mario exchange in this game was an easy call. Mario: "The Tigers coaching staff looks like they can still play… all of them." Rod: "Well, not all of them." Lulz.

About the Daily Smoko

Smoko is an Australian and New Zealand term for a short cigarette break during work. It can also describe a short coffee or tea break. TigsTown does not condone or support smoking, but it is a nice way to honor former manager Jim Leyland, and have you guys read recaps while you should probably be working.

Nick Shlain is TigsTown's staff writer and resident eccentric. He watched The Americans instead of the ninth inning last night. You can follow him on twitter @electricsnuff
