Tigers Get Soria for Knebel, Thompson

As first reported by Scout's Kyle Bogenschutz, the Tigers and Rangers have agreed to a deal that will send Texas closer Joakim Soria to the Tigers in exchange for Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson.

The Tigers have been desperately in the market for a shutdown reliever, and late Wednesday, they have found their guy in Texas Rangers closer Joakim Soria.

The Tigers will send Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson to the Rangers, while getting Soria in return.

Soria has a 2.70 ERA over 35 games for the Rangers, recording 17 saves in 33 1/3 innings pitched. He's also struck out 42 and walked just four, while posting a miniscule 0.87 WHIP. He also has an outstanding 1.07 FIP and has already been worth 1.7 fWAR, despite limited appearances for the Rangers.

The price for Soria comes at a high price, as the Tigers are relinquishing two members of the top ten prospects in the organization. Knebel was ranked 4th in the organization by TigsTown, while Thompson slotted in as the team's 6th best prospect.

Knebel was getting his second shot in Detroit after a rough-go in his first stint earlier this season. Knebel had a 6.23 ERA in Detroit over eight appearances, but had a sub-two ERA at both Erie and Toledo, while trying to refine his command.

Thompson, just 20 years old, was just promoted to Double-A after dominating in High-A Lakeland for much of the first half of the season. He posted a 3.14 ERA for the Flying Tigers over 16 starts, and gave Erie six strong innings in his first start, along with striking out five in five innings in his second Double-A showing.

According to Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com, the deal has been agreed to in principle, but is awaiting the completion of physical exams on the players.
