Caps Offense Powers Team to Win (4/30 Recaps)

Hernandez had two hits and a run

The Whitecaps put an end to their three game losing streak on Monday evening when the offense came alive with 15 hits on the evening, including six 'Caps with multiple hit games. Meanwhile, Toledo and Lakeland didn't get the same offense necessary to help earn a win.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens – ROCHESTER 4, TOLEDO 1
11-13, 3rd in West division
When you don't score runs it's tough to win. The Mud Hens learned that lesson the hard way Monday night with a 4-1 loss to Rochester at Fifth Third Field- their third in the fourth and final game of the series. In all three losses the Mud Hens averaged fewer than three runs. Offensively, Jack Hannahan had another two-hit outing with an RBI, and Mike Hessman recorded two singles. Ramon Santiago and Dane Sardinha each had a hit and pitcher Yorman Bazardo (1-2, 4.10 E.R.A) had four strikeouts in eight and 1/3 innings despite the loss. Bazardo allowed only three earned runs on right hits. Tigers iron man Jose Mesa will get his first taste of the minors this season, in a rehab stint Tuesday against the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees. Mesa will throw 25 pitches or go two innings for the before RHP Zach Miner takes the mound for the Mud Hens at 6:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.

AA Erie SeaWolves – OFF DAY
10-10, 4th in Southern division
Erie had Monday off but returns to action on Tuesday at home vs. Reading at 6:35pm.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers –SARASOTA 7, LAKELAND 2
10-14, t-4th in West division
The Flying Tigers fell to the Sarasota Reds Monday night 7-2. Starting pitcher Eleazar Aponte pitched four innings and surrendered four runs on nine hits. Paul Hammond then threw two innings of scoreless baseball, but relievers Derek Witt and Ricky Steik surrendered a total of three runs in the final three innings. On the offensive side, Ryan Roberson continued his recent hitting trend, batting 2-3 with a solo home run in the 5th inning. Cameron Maybin also scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Hernandez. Lakeland looks to rebound and take the series Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM. Matt Righter will most likely make the start for Lakeland, while Sarasota's starting pitcher has yet to be announced.

A West Mich. Whitecaps –W. MICH. 6, KANE CTY. 1
11-11, 3rd in Eastern division

The Whitecaps bats came alive Monday for 15 hits en route to a 6-1 victory at Kane County. Every batter in the lineup had at least one hit, and six batters, Gorkys Hernandez, Brennan Boesch, Ryan Strieby, James Skelton, Jeramy Laster and Santo De Leon had two hits apiece. Angel Castro got the win with one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts in five innings. West Michigan took the lead for good in the fifth on doubles by Hernandez and Scott Sizemore and singles by Deik Scram and Boesch. The series continues Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
