The Tigers had many options for what they would do with the catcher position in 2008, but the first one came down to whether or not the Tigers would exercise their $13 million player option on Ivan Rodriguez.
On Tuesday, they elected to pay Rodriguez the $13 million, rather than buyout the option for $3 million and find someone new at the catcher position.
There appeared to be some skepticism within the organization about whether or not Rodriguez, with his decline at the plate, was worth that type of money. However, there were few realistic alternatives to replace him.
Besides being regarded as arguably the best catcher of all-time, Rodriguez has also been credited with aiding the development of the Tigers young but talented pitching staff.
In 2007, Rodriguez hit .281 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI. He saw his defensive statistics drop a bit, throwing out just 31% of would-be base stealers.
