Tigers Designate Jones, Call Up Joyce

On Monday, the Tigers announced that they had designated outfielder Jacque Jones for assignment, and have called up outfielder Matt Joyce from Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers were hoping that they could combine Marcus Thames and Jacque Jones, and receive solid defense as well as offensive production in left field by platooning the two.

But through a month, Jacque Jones simply had not been carrying his weight, hitting just .165 with one home run and five RBI.

To replace Jones, the Tigers have called up otufielder Matt Joyce from Toledo. Joyce was hitting .299 with five home runs and 21 RBI for the 'Hens. He was carrying an OPS of .903 and a slugging percentage of .536, which placed him in the top ten in the International League.

The 23-year old Joyce throws right but hits left and was taken by the Tigers in the 12th round of the '05 draft. He was currently the Tigers' 10th best prospect according to TigsTown.
