After pulling up lame on Monday night against the Angels, Gary Sheffield seemed destined for the disabled list. That trip to the disabled list opened up a slot for a slugger from Toledo.

Gary Sheffield has battled injury issues all season long. And on Monday, he finally met his match. An oblique strain forced Sheffield to the 15-day disabled list.

Sheffield was hitting .213 with three home runs and 12 RBI.

To replace Sheffield, the Tigers purchased the contract of Triple-A Toledo slugger Jeff Larish.

The 25-year old Larish was helping lead the way at the plate along with third baseman Mike Hessman. Larish was hitting .274 with 16 home runs and 43 RBI. The 43 RBI were good for second in the International League, while his 16 home runs ranked third.

With Carlos Guillen struggling to play in the field, he'll likely be taking a majority of the at-bats at designated hitter, so Larish will likely be looking to get playing time as a pinch hitter, occasional DH, and as a possible sub for Miguel Cabrera.
