Signed Matt Treaner (C)
Analysis: Though the deal is not technically complete, only formalities remain. A one-year, $750,000 contract for a backup catcher isn't a bad deal. The Tigers have harbored interest in Treaner for a while, and getting him via this route, rather than via trade is a good thing. This allows Dusty Ryan to start the year in Toledo for extra development; a move that was desparately needed. A Laird/Treanor catching combo should be adequate in 2009.

Non-tendered Aquilino Lopez (RHP)
Analysis: Don't be fooled by the pretty ERA, Lopez wasn't that good in 2008. I was surprised they even allowed him to remain on the roster this long. Don't be shocked if he's brought back on a minor league deal with a non-roster invitation to spring training. The Tigers did tender contracts to others such as outfielder Marcus Thames; though analyzing the roster indicates he could be hard pressed to stick around through spring training.

Re-signed Ramon Santiago to one-year contract
Analysis: The move successfully avoids arbitration, and gets Santiago back in the fold at a mere $825,000 for the 2009 season. Between Santiago and Everett, the Tiers will have their shortstop position manned this season for nder $2 million; not a bad bargain for overall good defense and a little small ball at the bottom of the lineup.

Detroit selected Kyle Bloom (LHP) from Pittsburgh in the Rule 5 draft
Arizona selected James Skelton (C) from Detroit in the Rule 5 draft
Detroit acquired Edwin Jackson (RHP) from Tampa Bay in exchange for Matt Joyce (OF)
Released Carlos Cachutt (RHP)
Released Dick Guanipa (INF)
Signed Ramon Franco (RHP)
Signed Aldo Navia (OF)
Signed Jesus Alvarado (OF)
Signed Eugenio Suarez (INF)
Analysis: The loss of Skelton may seem tough to swallow, but it's likely not a big deal. There are enough concerns over his game that he either won't be a huge impact player, or he'll be returned. Bloom has made some nice strides after battling inconsistency early, and he could be a nice bullpen lefty in 2009. Despite Joyce's shiny power numbers in Detroit last year, this is a solid move for the Tigers. Jackson's arsenal has impressive potential and must simply be harnessed to begin fulfilling his potential. Joyce was likely in the middle of a roster crunch, and could have easily ended up back in Toledo to start the season, while Jackson fills a much needed pitching hole for the Tigers. We'll have more on the recent signings from the Dominican and Venezuela as it becomes available, so check back with TigsTown for the bios and full scouting reports soon.

Signed Adam Everett (SS) to one-year contract
Analysis: Everett will have the opportunity to take the full-time shortstop duties in Detroit in 2009. His contract is still pending a more thorough physical, but indications are this will be done. If his shoulder is 100%, Everett is an elite level defender and shores up a major defensive weakness from 2008.

Detroit acquired Gerald Laird (C) from Texas in exchange for Guillermo Moscoso (RHP) and Carlos Melo (RHP)
Analysis: The Tigers were in dire need of a proven MLB catcher, and Laird fits the bill. Moscoso is nearly MLB ready as either a back end starter or long reliever, and he should have value quickly in Texas. Melo is a long way away from the big leagues, but he has plenty of arm strength and projection for fans to drool over.

Detroit resigned C Dane Sardinha to a minor league deal.
Analysis: Sardinha has been signed to add depth to the catching position for the organization, and as a potential emergency stopgap at the big league level. The Tigers will likely invite Sardinha to big league camp, but will still pursue a big leaguer to either be the starter, or possibly platoon with Dusty Ryan.

Detroit purchased the contracts of Wilkin Ramirez (OF), Casper Wells (OF), Zach Simons (RHP), Alfredo Figaro (RHP), and Guillermo Moscoso (RHP), and added them to the 40-man roster.
Analysis: In time to protect these players from the Rule 5 draft, the Tigers added some key young players to the 40-man roster. Alfredo Figaro is a mild surprise, but his raw arm strength is enough to entice the organization. Some surprising omissions include second baseman Will Rhymes, catcher James Skelton, and right-handers Jay Sborz and Luis Marte. All four players will now be subject to the Rule 5 draft next month; and could be lost from the organization.

Re-signed Max St. Pierre (C)
Declared the free agnecy of the following players: Ian Ostlund (LHP), Derek Wathan (INF), Blaine Neal (RHP), Jeremy Johnson (RHP), Yorman Bazardo (RHP), Freddy Guzman (OF), Timo Perez (OF), Kody Kirkland (3B), Erick Almonte (INF), Pedro Cotto (1B), Caonabo Cosme (INF), Luis Gil (RHP), and Orlando Perdomo (RHP)
Analysis: Bringing back St. Pierre and Ostlund is not a shocking decision, as both have value at the Triple-A level. The departure of the remainder of these players does not have a drastic impact on the system, as most are quite easily replaceable on the free agent market. Freddy Guzman's speed and on-base ability will be missed, but he was unlikely to have an impact in Detroit. The long tenure of Kody Kirkland at third base in this system has come to a close. It's unfortunate, a player with so much promise that could just never put it together.

Posted by: Mark, 11/3/08
11/2/08
Signed Pat Stanley (RHP)
Todd Jones (RHP), Freddy Garcia (RHP), and Vance Wilson (C) filed for free agency
Analysis: The Tigers are still interested in Garcia returning to the rotation in 2009, at a reasonable cost. Vance has expressed an interest in returning to Detroit, but there are still lingering questions about his health and the Tigers eagerness to bring him back in behind the plate. Don't be shocked if Wilson and/or Garcia are in camp with Detroit next spring. Stanley's yet another Indy League signing for the Tigers, having played for the Newark Bears in 2008. He's got solid stuff but lacks an ability to control any of his four pitches.

Detroit declined the 2009 option on Edgar Renteria (SS)
Outrighted Gary Glover (RHP) from the 40-man roster
Outrighted Dane Sardinha (C) from the 40-man roster
Analysis: Nothing surprising here. The Renteria move is just making official what the Tigers had essentially already announced. It will be interesting to see if he is approached about a return at a reduced rate. Glove and Sardinha both refused the assignments to Toledo and are now free agents. More moves will be coming in the next few days, as players like Kyle Farnsworth, Casey Fossum, Kenny Rogers, and the like can all file for free agency, five days after the World Series is complete.

Virgil Vasquez (RHP) claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox
Analysis: In a move likely meant to start clearing 40-man roster space for off-season moves, the Tigers jettisoned Vasquez from the roster; exposing him to waivers and being claimed by the Red Sox. After a down season in Triple-A, Vasquez's prospect star had come into question by many, but apparently not one of the better run organizations in the game.

Released Cory Middleton (OF)
Released Justin Justice (OF)
Released Dario Carvajal (RHP)
Released Brandon Harrigan (C)
Released Hayden Lackey (RHP)
Released Santo Mieses (RHP)
Released Kyle Pearson (RHP)
Released Carlos Ramirez (1B/3B)

Released Zach Piccola (LHP)
Released Kelvin Cedano (RHP)
Released Angel Castro (RHP)
Released Danny Zell (LHP)
Released Derek Witt (RHP)
Released Luis Arlet (OF)
Analysis: A few surprises among these moves, including Parrott, Justice, and Castro. Justice was coming off a fine season at High-A Lakeland, but he was repeating the level, and in the past there have been rumblings of off-field issues that needed to be straightened out. Parrott's release comes on the heels of yet another disappointing season at the plate. His offensive progression has stagnated, and he hasn't taken to any position defensively. Castro's departure is not surprising given his age and lack of development, but given the promise and control he has showed in the past, one might have thought he'd get one more season to put it together.

Francis Beltran (RHP) granted free agency
Analysis: No shock here. Beltran was a good risk for the 2008 season, but the odds were against his return. He'll head somewhere else where he can get another crack at a big league bullpen. There's a slim chance he comes back to the Tigers organization, but I'd set the odds pretty low on that one.
Posted by: Mark, 10/15/08

Signed Charlie Lisk (C)
Analysis: Lisk is a solid defender with some ability with the bat. If he makes it out of spring training, he's more roster filler at the A-ball level.

Signed Yorfrank Lopez (RHP)
Signed Jose Soledad (INF)
Signed Steven Mercedes (OF)
Analysis: Mercedes is the only Dominican of the recently signed trio, with Lopez and Soledad both preparing to report to the VSL for the 2009 season. Check back with TigsTown for all the details on these three prospects including scouting reports.

10/8/08
Signed Chad Linder (LHP)
Signed Mike LaLuna (RHP)
Granted free agency to RHP Francisco Cruceta
Analysis: Cruceta wasn't the answer the Tigers were hoping for in the bullpen this season, and his hitting the free agent market is certainly not surprising. I'm sure another team will be more than willing to take another chance on his upside. The two pitchers added to the system both have some upside, and both should fill roles in the A-ball range in 2009.

9/29/08
Signed Kris Regas (LHP)
Signed Beau Torbert (OF)
Analysis: The Tigers went back to the well at Souix Falls. After signing lefty Josh Kite in July, they returned to the American Association champs and signed Regas and Torbert. Torbert was named the League's MVP on the heels of a .324/.382/.568 season that included 19 bombs, 14 steals, and 71 driven in over 90 games. Regas was just as impressive, posting a 1.29 ERA with 30 saves in 42 innings. He walked only eight all season, and struck out 72, while yielding just 26 hits. Both players will report to minor league spring traning in March. Check back with TigsTown for updated scouting reports as they become available.

Wilsen Palacios (RHP) suspended 50 games
Eduardo Gonzalez (RHP) suspended 50 games
Analysis: Both players will begin their suspension at the start of next season. Watch closely though, as the organization hasn't had much tolerance for performance enhancing drug suspensions at the minor league level; releasing prior culprits such as Alvaro Diaz, Sendy Vasquez, and Damien Myers within a year of their suspension.

Detroit Tigers optioned Chris Lambert (RHP) to Toledo
Jeff Larish (1B/3B) called up to Detroit from Toledo
Will Rhymes (2B) promoted to Toledo from Erie
Analysis: With Carlos Guillen unavailable for a few days, the Tigers have brought Jeff Larish up to try his hand at third base. Lambert was optioned down, but will return to Detroit on September 1 for his next start, at which point rosters will have expanded and the Tigers won't need to option anyone down. To fill Larish's spot in Toledo, Will Rhymes was called up to handle the slot for the final few days of the season.

Detroit Tigers purchased contract of Chris Lambert (RHP) from Toledo
Francis Beltran (RHP) designated for assignment
Freddy Garcia (RHP) re-assigned from Lakeland to Toledo
Jon Kibler (LHP) placed on West Michigan disabled list (left shoulder)
Roger Tomas (INF) activated from West Michigan disabled list (wrist)
Analysis: We'll update when we see who Lambert replaces on the 25-man roster, but for now the focus has to be on his impending big league debut. He has reeled off a fine season and if he can maintain his composure, he should be just fine in the big leagues. Garcia keeps pushing his way to a September call-up, in what could be an audition for not just the Tigers in 2009, but all of baseball. Kibler's injury is troublesome, but there appears to be hope that he will return in time for the playoffs. Watch him closely as the season winds down. UPDATE: Beltran is the unlucky soul that heads out for Lambert's MLB debut. Beltran will have to clear waivers to make it down to Toledo, but considering he's done that once this year, I don't think it will be a problem.

Lauren Gagnier (RHP) re-assigned from West Michigan to Lakeland
Aaron Fuhrman (LHP) re-assigned from Oneonta to West Michigan
Analysis: Gagnier has now been a member of every full-season club in the Tigers' minor league system. His assignment to Lakeland likely stems from subsequent promotion for someone from Lakeland to Erie, to fill the spot vacated by Matt Rusch's promotion to Toledo. No word at this time as to who the others are involved in this series of moves at both Erie and West Michigan. --- UPDATE: Fuhrman takes Gagnier's spot at West Michigan, meaning there could be multiple candidates for the fifth rotation slot down the stretch. Those candidates could easily include Hess, Nardozzi, Fuhrman (who has a history of starting), and even Jacobson or Green.

Matt Rusch (RHP) re-assigned from Erie to Toledo
Analysis: Rusch is racking up the miles between Erie and Toledo this season, as he is the (un)lucky guy to be the swingman between the two bullpens. Some of his inconsistency this season may be chalked up to the inconsistency in assignments. The open Erie bullpen slot likely won't be filled for a couple of days.

Todd Jones (RHP) placed on Detroit disabled list (shoulder) retroactive to August 16th
Detroit purchased contract of Gary Glover (RHP) from Toledo
Analysis: Jones second trip to the DL may spell the end of his time in Detroit. If his shoulder doesn't stop hurting with this trip to the list, his career could also be in jeopardy. Glover was quite poor in his time with Tampa this season, but he has a history of filling some solid innings at the big league level.

Derek Witt (RHP) re-assigned from Lakeland to Erie
Matt Rusch (RHP) re-assigned from Erie to Toledo
Joel Zumaya (RHP) placed on Detroit disabled list (arm)
Francis Beltran (RHP) recalled from Toledo to Detroit
Lester Oliveros (RHP) re-assigned from Oneonta to Lakeland
Analysis: Zumaya's continued arm problems are a concern, though they should be expected given the rapid nature in which he came back. Just hope this is nothing more than soreness. Beltran's stay in Detroit is likely to be short-lived. Oliveros has been dominating the NYPL since debuting stateside in June, and this promotion backfills the roster spot opened by Dontrelle Willis' move to Toledo. Oliveros has the stuff and mentality to handle this leap, and he should be successful in a relief role in short order. UPDATE: Rusch's promotion to Toledo backfills for the loss of Beltran, while Witt rounds out the Erie bullpen after the departure of Rusch. All these moves still leave a spot open in Lakeland for Freddy Garcia to start his road back to the big leagues.

Ryan Strieby (1B) placed on Lakeland disabled list
Jordan Lennerton (1B) re-assigned from GCL to Lakeland
Dontrelle Willis (LHP) re-assigned from Lakeland to Toledo
Eddie Bonine (RHP) placed on Toledo disabled list (shoulder)
Analysis: Willis heads to Toledo in place of the injured Eddie Bonine, and the jump back to Triple-A will be a huge test of his refined delivery and new-found 'command.' If he demonstrates an ability to get outs at the minor league's highest level, he may be in line for another shot at Detroit before the season ends. It also appears a foot problem is the only thing that can slow Strieby's power barrage. Lennerton will be stretched to be competitive in the Florida State League, so don't expect too much.

8/1/08
James Skelton (C) re-assigned from Lakeland to Erie
Analysis:Skelton's move to Erie rounds out the catching carousel. This will be a huge test for Skelton, as advanced pitchers may be more likely to challenge a hitter with so little power. If his OBP dips significantly, that could be trouble for his prospect status.

Adrian Casanova (C) re-assigned from West Michigan to Lakeland
Angel Flores (C) re-assigned from Oneonta to Weste Michigan
Todd Jones (RHP) placed on Detroit disabled list (shoulder inflammation)
Clay Rapada (LHP) recalled from Toledo to Detroit
Ivan Rodriguez (C) traded to New York Yankees in exchange for Kyle Farnsworth (RHP)
Dane Sardinha (C) recalled from Toledo to Detroit
Dusty Ryan (C) re-assigned from Erie to Toledo
Derek Wathan (INF) suspended
Analysis: Sardinha likely won't be playing much in Detroit, as the Tigers push for the playoffs, but his departure opens an interesting opportunity for Dusty Ryan to demonstrate his struff at Triple-A after putting together a nice campaign at Erie. Look for a couple of additional moves to follow, at least to backfill Ryan's spot in Erie. Jones has been hurting for a while, so this move should help the bullpen, while Rapada has continued to pitch well at Toledo and may help an ailing relief corps. One reliever will still need to go in order to make room for Kyle Farnsworth on Friday.

Andrew Kown (RHP) released
Marcelo Perez (RHP) released
Ben Fritz (RHP) activated from Erie disabled list
Fernando Seguignol (1B) released
Analysis: The release of Kown and Perez is not entirely shocking. Perez's performance this year has been decidedly mediocre, while Kown has been up and down, and with the health of his arm in question, the move has some merit. Fritz returns to the pitching staff, though there may not be a rotation slot open for him right away; that will depend on the organization's immediate plans for Josh Rainwater and Luis Marte.

Zach Miner (RHP) recalled from Toledo to Detroit
Jeff Larish (1B) re-assigned from Detroit to Toledo
Wilkin Ramirez (OF) placed on Erie disabled list (quad)
Danny Worth (SS) activated from Erie disabled list (back/shoulder)
Eddie Bonine (RHP) re-assigned from Erie to Toledo
Luis Marte (RHP) will be activated from Erie disabled list (elbow) for tonight's game
Analysis: Bonine was expected to return to Toledo in short order, and his departure from Erie clears room for the return of Luis Marte. Marte pitched well in his only rehab outing with the GCL team. The jump back to Double-A should be a good test for him, with a critical eye kept on both his control and velocity, as potential signs as to the health of his right elbow. Update: Ramirez hits the DL after missing several games with a strained muscle in his leg. Its probably a wise move, forcing him to sit out for at least a week, and allowing the team to replace him on the roster. Worth's activation is a good sign, and hopefully his bat perks up with a healthy back and shoulder.

Max Leon (INF) placed on Toledo disabled list (shoulder)
Kody Kirkland (3B) re-assigned from Erie to Toledo
Santo De Leon (3B) re-assigned from Lakeland to Erie
Adam Frost (SS) re-assigned from GCL to Lakeland
Analysis: Leon's left shoulder subluxation is unfortunate, and depending on the severity, he could be out a while. The promotions that followed could be scary at some point, as none of Kirkland, De Leon, or Frost are really ready for the next level of competition in my opinion.

Luis Marte (RHP) assigned to GCL on rehab
Santo Mieses (RHP) re-assigned from GCL to Oneonta
Sean Finefrock (RHP) retired
Dontrelle Willis (LHP) activated from Lakeland disabled list
Orlando Perdomo (RHP) re-assigned from Lakeland (GCL Rehab) to Oneonta
Analysis: Ordonez is healthy and feeling good, which should be a nice boost for the Tiger offense coming out of the break. Despite a solid job with the big club, Thomas was out-performed by Matt Joyce. Clete should get another shot in Detroit this year. Putkonen and Marte should be watched closely, moreso Marte in the immediate as he returns to the mound. Willis' return to the mound will be watched intently by both the organization and Tiger fans everywhere, as his new mechanics could seriously alter his effectiveness and ability to get back to the big leagues. Swapping out Finefrock for Mieses helps the Oneonta bullpen, as Finefrock is in jeopardy of being released. There's been no official word yet, however.

Luis Gil (RHP) placed on Oneonta disabled list
Angel Flores (C) re-assigned from West Michigan to Oneonta
Josh Workman (2B) re-assigned from GCL to Oneonta
Brandon Douglas (SS) re-assigned from Oneonta to West Michigan
Analysis: Sardinha should be activated soon, and resume his duties as the primary catcher at Toledo. Douglas' move to West Michigan was necessary to give the 'Caps a true shortstop in the wake of an injury to Audy Ciriaco (more on that later), and Workman's move to Oneonta gives him a challenge commensurate with his experience level.

Danny Worth (SS) placed on Erie disabled list (back/shoulder)
Louis Ott (UT) re-assigned from Lakeland to Erie
Gustavo Nunez (INF) re-assigned from GCL to Lakeland
Analysis: Worth finally hits the DL after a long battle with his back and shoulder, and hopefully the DL stint will allow him to heal and re-discover his bat. Ott gives Erie a ton of positional flexibility, but with Shawn Roof still there, he's unlikely to see a ton of time.

Eddie Bonine (RHP) optioned to Erie
Jeff Larish (1B) recalled from Toledo to Detroit
Dane Sardinha (C) designated for assignment
Brandon Inge (UT) reinstated from Detroit disabled list
Analysis: A fifth starter won't be needed before the break and Bonine's trip to Erie allows him to remain on his starting schedule. He is a candidate to return following the break, but the organization has several potential options for the fifth starter spot. With Inge coming off the DL, Sardinha was the likely guy to go, and without any options remaining he has to clear waivers to make it back to Toledo.
