On Wednesday, the Tigers placed catcher/infielder Brandon Inge on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle, calling up Dane Sardinha from Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers also traded reliever Denny Bautista for minor league pitcher Kyle Pearson.

Brandon Inge had been battling the strained oblique muscle since the beginning of June, and after weeks of no improvement, the Tigers decided to let Inge rest the injury.

The move to the disabled list is retroactive to Monday, as Inge played as a late-inning defensive replacement in Sunday's game against San Diego.

The move comes at a time when the Tigers had just started to get into a rhythm rotating Inge and Pudge Rodriguez behind the plate. The move likely means that Rodriguez will return to being the team's everyday catcher.

Replacing Inge will be Toledo's starting catcher Dane Sardinha. Sardinha, 29, has just five career big league at-bats, coming in two separate years with Cincinnati.

Sardinha is solid defensively behind the plate, and has been known for working well with pitching staffs. However, offensively, Sardinha is very limited, making minimal contact and not hitting for much power either. He has a minor league career .601 OPS.

Meanwhile, with the bullpen crunch, there was no longer room for Denny Bautista, so the Tigers shipped him to the Pirates, in exchange for minor league reliever Kyle Pearson. Pearson throws a low-90's fastball, and also a hard slider, but has struggled in the past with command. Between A-ball and Double-A, Pearson had a 6.85 ERA in 16 appearances, with 15 strikeouts and 16 walks.

Bautista felt the numbers crunch, but hadn't pitched that poorly for the Tigers. In 16 games, he had a 3.32 ERA, but also struggled with his control, with 14 walks vs. ten strikeouts.
