Casey Fien hasn't exactly been a household among Tigers followers, but the shutdown reliever has now…
Fien Excited for Next Opportunity
Casey Fien has been impressive all season long except for a short time in May when he posted a 6.79 ERA in 11 appearances. He followed that up by not allowing a run in 11 appearances in the month of June. Fien has been so good in his first season of Double-A ball that he earned a call up to Toledo to replace Mud Hens reliever Blaine Neal who was selected to play on the U.S.A. Olympic team. "Coming in to this year I just wanted to come in and do my job whenever it was asked and I get the opportunity with Blaine going to the Olympic team" Fien said, "I'm going to take my opportunity and run with it and we'll see what happens" he added. Fien began the season pitching out of the bullpen for Erie but he did not move into the closer role until May when Freddy Dolsi was called up to Detroit and Brett Jensen went on the disabled list with an elbow injury. He made 40 appearances in Erie and posted a 3-3 record with 12 saves. He had a 2.96 ERA and struck out 42 batters while walking only 12. "As a closer you have to throw strikes and I'm a strike thrower" Fien said. "Fien has been outstanding for us, ever since June he's bee rock solid" SeaWolves Manager Tom Brookens said. Fien is leaving a tough situation in Erie and going to Toledo where they are battling for a division title and a playoff berth. "I bet the atmosphere is going to be totally different there because they are playoff bound and just being a part of that, I can't wait". The SeaWolves have been plagued with inexperience, injuries and call-ups all season forcing them to battle at the bottom of the standings while Toledo has been able to overcome their roster moves because of a potent offense and decent pitching. Fien will probably spend the rest of the season with Toledo if he proves that he can handle the hitters in Triple-A and he is a candidate for a September call-up to the Tigers. "It's a goal but I'm really not thinking about it, I'm just thinking about going to Toledo trying to get the job done there" Fien said, adding "I know they're playoff bound so I want to get them to that position" . Fien has all the tools to succeed in Toledo and he has proved himself all season in Erie helping him earn the promotion to the Triple-A Mud Hens.
