It's been a long season for Yorman Bazardo, and the pain continued Saturday against Richmond. In a season where he was expected to be a critical piece with the big league club, Bazardo was lit up for six runs in just 4 1/3 innings, shooting his season ERA to 6.61, and dropping him to a 4-10 record on the season. Toledo's only run came off the bat of Brent Clevlen, who ripped a solo home run in the second innings; his 22nd of the season. Timo Perez continues to hit late in the year, stroking a double in four trips.
Casper Wells continues to do the unexpected at Erie. In what was originally viewed as a temporary assignment to Double-A, Wells has turned it into his personal coming out part. With his 14th home run in the 7th inning, Wells is now hitting .298 with Erie, and he scored three more runs in the game. James Skelton scored four times after singling and walking twice, while Wilkin Ramirez doubled twice and drove in two in the win. Luke French continued to fly under the radar with another excellent start, spinning a two-run complete game against the Defenders, while not walking a batter and striking out six.
A night after posting nine runs against the Miracle, the LFT offense just couldn't muster much of anything. Collecting just five hits with a double off the bat of Justin Justice, only one run crossed the plate. Alfredo Figaro did his part to keep Lakeland in the game, allowing just two runs in six innings, but Robbie Weinhardt couldn't hold them in check. Weinhardt gave up three runs in just one inning, and his magical run appears to have come to a screaching halt.
It set up for a brilliant pitcher's duel, and the game in South Bend last night, did not disappoint. West Michigan's Thad Weber yielded just one run in 5 2/3 innings, while Kelvin Cedano pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. On the other side, Diamondbacks top prospect Jarrod Parker left West Michigan scoreless in five innings, en route to a 1-0 win. Audy Ciriaco and Chris White both doubled in the contest, and Kyle Peter singled for the 'Caps only hits of the night.
Led by a four-hit night from All-Star Mike Gosse, the O-Tiger offense exploded Saturday night. Carlos Ramirez also had a big night with three hits, including a triple and home run while driving in three. Tyler Weber, Keith Stein, and Brent Wyatt all doubled in the game, to contribute to the impressive offensive output. Dan DeLucia gave up both Hudson Valley runs in four innings of work, while Darwin De Leon was outstanding in his four innings as the tandem starter; allowing just one hit, while striking out seven.
In a rain shortened game against the Braves, Brandon Hamilton and Jared Gayhart combined for a three-hit shutout. Gayhart picked up the win while striking out three in two innings, to collect his first professional decision. Adam Frost notched three hits at the top of the lineup, and swiped his third base of the year. Chao-Ting Tang had another nice night, doubling in three trips to the plate.

While still missing some key components, the Hens managed a win Friday against Richmond. Dusty Ryan propelled the offense with three hits and his second Triple-A home run; a three-run shot in the fifth innings. Three Hens doubled in the game, as Clete Thomas, Michael Hollimon, and Kody Kirkland did the deed. In his debut at Toledo, lefty Dontrelle Willis was solid; giving up two runs on eight hits in six innings, while walking just two and striking out five. The solid start was another positive step in the recreation of Willis' career.
Erie also managed a win Friday, behind a three-run bomb from Casper Wells; his 13th with the 'Wolves. Wilkin Ramirez doubled in four trips to the plate, and Santo De Leon ripped his fifth Double-A home run. Danny Christensen hasn't always been dominant this year, but the lefty allowed just two runs (one earned) in eight innings of work last night, while Rudy Darrow picked up the win after blowing the save in the ninth.
Michael Bertram has enjoyed getting plenty of at-bats with Santo De Leon in Erie; and on Friday he knocked his seventh home run in the first inning off Twins prospect Deolis Guerra. Brandon Timm poked two doubles, and Gustavo Nunez continued to impress by driving in three with a single. Jonah Nickerson turned in one of his brilliant outings, striking out six in seven shutout innings. Zach Simons and Ryan Perry followed with scoreless innings and two strikeouts each.
For being a 2008 draft pick, Alex Avila has held his own with an aggressive assignment to West Michigan; raising his average to .288 with a 2-for-4 night, including his eleventh double. Chris White stayed hot Friday with three hits, including two doubles, while Joe Tucker also collected three hits, all singles. In an unusual move, Chris Carlson was working from the leadoff spot and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jon Kibler was positively dominant last night, spinning eight shutout innings with no walks and nine strikeouts. Noah Krol gave up two runs without recording an out, but Wilton Garcia cleaned up the mess for his first save of the season.
David Stokes gave up five runs in the first, and six total, in just three innings to take the loss. Mark Brackman yet again continued to get things in order, with three shutout innings of relief that included six strikeouts. There wasn't much offense from the O-Tigers, but Bryan Pounds jacked his second professional home run, and Mike Gosse drove in Brent Wyatt with a single.
Chao-Ting Tang and Luis Salas both collected a double among their two hits in game one on Friday, but neither could come around to score. Tang's double did drive in both Tiger runs, but that wasn't enough to get the win. Casey Crosby made his debut after Tommy John surgery last fall, going just 2/3 of an inning while walking three and giving up an unearned run. It wasn't a pretty debut, but at least he's back on the mound. Brayan Villareal came on in relief and worked 5 1/3 inning while giving up just one run, and striking out five.
In game two, the Tigers came to play a bit more, with Adam Frost leading the way at the top of the lineup with four hits, while Alexis Espinoza collected three of his own. Andy Dirks and Luis Palacios each collected two hits of their own as well. In a tandem starter situation, Victor Larez and Richard Zumaya combined for six innings while allowing three runs on four hits. They also combined to walk just one, and strike out seven. Reliever Eric Broberg picked up his first professional win with the rare scoreless inning that resulted in four strikeouts.
Despite another home run from Juaner Aguasvivas, and a triple from Alexander Nunez, the DSL Tigers could match the eight runs put up by the Nationals. Juaner's home run was part of a three hit night for him, while Luis Castillo posted four hits including a double and triple while playing center field. Ramon Lebron was touched up for six runs on seven hits in just three innings, and Emmanuel Del Orbe gave up two more in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Chris Lambert spun another fine outing, but couldn't get the run support to make the night complete. Allowing three runs in six innings, Lambert struck out six against just one walk. Kody Kirland's third Triple-A home run led the offense, along with a double from Max St. Pierre and two singles from Erick Almonte.
Despite three hits from Shawn Roof and two hits from four different players, the Erie offense couldn't match that which was posed by the New Britain Rock Cats. Will Rhymes, Casper Wells, Wilkin Ramirez, and Deik Scram all ripped two singles in the contest. Guillermo Moscoso's third Double-A start didn't go as well as the prior two, giving up five runs in just four innings. Scot Drucker also had a rough night, giving up five runs of his own in just 1 2/3 innings.
Michael Bertram is taking advantage of his extended playing time with Santo De Leon in Erie, ripping two home runs to lead the Lakeland offense with four RBI. Justin Justice remained hot with three hits in five at-bats, while scoring once. Duane Below continued to struggle in duplicating his success from 2007, giving up five runs in just three innings. Lester Oliveros made his High-A debut with a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout.
The West Michigan offense just couldn't get goingn on Thursday, registering only five hits in the game; all singles. Joe Tucker led the way with two singles while Alex Avila walked twice to keep performing well in his debut season. Lauren Gagnier got things back together with seven innings of one-run ball that included five strikeouts. Orlando Perdomo continued a run of solid pitching since his promotion back to West Michigan, with two perfect innings.
Despite three hits from Brent Wyatt and and two from All-Star Mike Gosse, the Oneonta offense was shut down to just three runs. Trevor Feeney didn't do much to keep the O-Tigers to keep them in the game, yielding six total runs in five innings with four strikeouts. Santo Mieses also allowed a run, while Tyler Conn gave up three in just two innings.
Two doubles from Robinson Figueroa that included four runs driven in, led the DSL offense to victory over the Padres. Alexander Nunez also picked up two hits that included a double, while Juaner Aguasvivas notched his fifth home run of the season. Rayni Guichardo was solid in his start Thursday, but he was nothing compared to the three perfect relief innings from Yinio Calderon. Guichardo picked up the win to move to 2-5 on the year, while Calderon collected his first save of the season.

Toledo pushed their game with Louisville to 12 innings before eventually falling on a pair of runs in the top half of the 12th. Francisco Cruceta took the loss, giving up the two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Anastacio Martinez took a no decision, giving up three runs in six innings of work. Derek Wathan had two hits, a run and an RBI, with Mike Hollimon and Dusty Ryan each adding two hits apiece.
Erie saw its seven game winning streak come to an end against New Britain on Wednesday, with Josh Rainwater taking the loss. Rainwater didn't pitch poorly though, allowing four runs (two earned) in 6 1/3 innings. He did however walk four while striking out only two. Deik Scram had two doubles and two RBI in the loss.
Jordan Tata was hit hard as Lakeland fell to Clearwater on Wednesday evening. Tata lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up six runs before exiting. Jay Sborz did pitch 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Michael Bertram and Cale Iorg each chipped in with two hits apiece - Iorg also had an RBI.
Audy Ciriaco ripped a walk-off single with the bases loaded to give West Michigan a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Lansing. Brett Jacobson earned the win for pitching 2 2/3 of perfect relief. He gave up two runs in just 1/3 of an inning. Darlin Duran struggled in his start, giving up four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Luis Palacios had a huge game at the plate, with three hits, two of which were home runs, three runs scored, and three RBI.
The DSL Tigers out-hit their way to a victory, putting up 14 runs on the board. Juaner Aguasvivas and Elvin Soto each had home runs, while Raynolds Guzman drove in four runs to lead the way.

The Erie offense continued to roll Tuesday night, as three players collected three hits, and two more notched two apiece. Will Rhymes, playing shortstop in an attempt to become more versatile, logged two singles and a double while scoring two runs, raising his season average to .303. Both Wilkin Ramires and Jeff Frazier also ripped three hits, driving in three combined runs. Casper Wells may have only had one hit, but his triple and two walks led to three runs scored and an RBI on the night. Luis Marte was again solid, but unspectacular since returning from his elbow injury. With a quality start that saw the Rock Cats collect seven hits and a walk in just six innings, Marte moved to 3-2 with the 'Wolves. Matt Rusch was superb over two innings of relief, and Brendan Wise closed the door with a scoreless ninth.
Jordan Lennerton's debut with the LFT couldn't have gone much better, as he ripped a single and a double while driving in a run, in three trips to the plate. Also collecting a single and double on the night was third baseman Michael Bertram. Rick Porcello continued his mastery of the Florida State League, giving up just one run on six hits in five innings, while inducing twelve groundouts to just one flyout and two strikeouts. Zach Simons and Ryan Perry logged four hitless innings of relief, with six strikeouts.
It wasn't a pretty night in the field for the 'Caps, as Ronnie Bourquin committed two errors at third, and Audy Ciriaco commited his 38th error of the season at short. The errors led to two unearned runs behind Manny Miguelez, adding to the two he alread allowed. Miguelez took th eloss in 6 1/3 innings of work, while Wilton Garcia and Paul Nardozzi worked the relief innings. At the plate, Chris White notched two doubles in three trips, while Alex Avila ripped his tenth double since signing out of Alabama, as part of a 1-for-3 night.
Carlos Ramirez has started to heat up for the O-Tigers, with another three-hit game on Tuesday, while Keith Stein, Bryan Pounds, Brandon Douglas, and Brent Wyatt all collected two hits. Billy Nowlin slugged his fourth home run as a O-Tiger, driving in two on the third inning blast. Anthony Shawler received the start after spending the first part of his pro career in the bullpen, and he allowed just one run in four innings of work. Mark Brackman notched the win with three one-hit innings of relief, as he continues to get things back on track.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with two runs on a throwing error by the Indian shortstop, but couldn't complete the comeback in the 12th, falling one run short of tying the game again. Alden Carrithers finished the night 4-for-5 at the plate, while Luis Salas was 2-for-5 with his third home run of the season. Luis Sanz allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, while striking out seven, and Hayden Lackey struck out three in 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings. Rob Waite took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year, yielding two runs on two hits and two walks in two innings.
Carlos Melo couldn't keep the ball off the 'Nats bats on Tuesday, giving up five hits in just 3 1/3 innings, leading to three runs. Zuriel Stephenson continued to impress as he learns on the job, firing 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. Luis Castillo led the offense with a double and single in four trips, and second baseman Alexander Nunez also collected a double; his sixth of the season.

I believe it is safe to say Virgil Vasquez is making his case for a return trip to Detroit once the September call-ups begin. With a complete game shutout of the Norfolk Tide, Vasquez lowered his season ERA to 4.79 and moved to 8-12 on the year. Vasquez yielded only four hits and a walk, while striking out six. On offense, Jeff Larish was 2-for-4 with a single, double, and two runs scored, while Max Leon doubled as part of his two-hit night. Leon and outfielder Clete Thomas each picked up an RBI to push the Hens to victory.
In the completion of a suspended game from July 2nd, the LFT fell hard to the Threshers. Adding insult to injury, the since released Matt O'Brien was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings during the initial start of the game. Cody Satterwhite battled his control on Monday, giving up four walks and three runs without the benefit of a hit in 1 1/3 innings. In total for the game, Jeramy Laster poked a double and a homer, while Justin Justice also homered and tripled.
In the second game of the double-header, two hard-throwing pitching prospects squared off in a big time duel. Phillies prospect Joe Savery and the recently promoted Alfredo Figaro went to battle with only a first inning run off Figaro tainting a clean scoreboard. Figaro finished the complete game with only five hits allowed, no walks, and eight strikeouts. Gustavo Nunez picked up two hits including a double, and Michael Bertram also picked up a two-bagger.
It took eleven innings for the Silver Hawks to pull out the win, but they did so with three runs in the top of the frame and shut down the 'Caps offense in the bottom half. D-Backs top prospect Jarrod Parker was outstanding in six innings, and was matched by recent draftee Thad Weber. Weber didn't walk a batter in six innigns, while striking out nine and only allowing one run. The bullpen couldn't hold however, as Andrew Hess and Scott Green allowed four runs (only two earned) in four innings of combined work. Errors by Cory Middleton and Justin Henry didn't help the cause for the 'Caps. At the dish, Chris Carlson picked up three singles and an RBI, while Ronnie Bourquing and Alex Avila both doubled in the contest.
The Oneonta Tigers and Jamestown Jammers flipped roles in the halves of a double-header, each taking home a win in a 1-0 contest. In the first game, the O-Tigers only managed four hits, with two singles each coming off the bat of Brandon Douglas and Billy Nowlin. Darwin De Leon was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one unearned run in four innings, though he did walk six against four strikeouts.
In game two, three defensive miscues didn't cost the O-Tigers, as Mark Sorensen fired five shutout innings, and Lester Oliveros allowed just one hit in two innings of relief, with four strikeouts, for the save. Brandon Douglas picked up his third hit of the twin bill, and Brent Wyatt was 2-for-4 with a double in the game.
Luis Sanz, Victor Larez, and Nick Cassavechia were outstanding in pitching a three-hit combined shutout agains the Jays on Monday. The trio walked only two and struck out twelve opposing hitters. Pitching the middle 4 1/3 innings, Larez picked up the victory to even his record at 3-3, and Cassavechia notched his fifth save. Londell Taylor provided the offensive spark from the leadoff spot, with a single and double, while scoring the only run of the game. Luis Palacios and Alexis Espinoza both picked up singles in the win.
Marcos Nunez used his tall, lanky frame to fire seven innings of two-hit ball with only an unearned run allowed and eight strikeouts. Melvin Mercedes blew the lead in the ninth, through errors behind him on the infield were largely to blame. The only extra-base hits on offense came off the bats of Raynolds Guzman and Ricardo Olivo, who both doubled, and Santo Heredia's RBI triple.

Starter Eddie Bonine was roughed up before leaving the game with a sore shoulder in the fifth inning. Reliever Ian Ostlund couldn't put the fire out, giving up two runs of his own in just 2 1/3 innings, despite striking out four against no walks. Both Francisco Cruceta and Clay Rapada fired scoreless frames. Freddy Guzman's base stealing barrage continued with three more yesterday, giving him 44 with the Mud Hens this year. The offense was led by a two-run double from Timo Perez and two hits from Kody Kirkland who was manning first base while the Tigers continued their experiment with Jeff Larish at third.
Both Will Rhymes and Wilkin Ramirez picked up three hits against Reading yesterday, with Rhymes doubling and driving in two, and Wilkin ripping his 19th home run of the season. Also getting in on the extra-base action were Santo De Leon and Pedro Cotto, who both doubled in the game. Luke French wasn't spectacular, but the Erie bullpen was, working 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, led by Josh Kite who got the win and Rudy Darrow who struck out both men he faced for the save.
Someone in the Florida State League finally figured out a way to keep Ryan Strieby in check, holding him to an 0-for-4 performance on Sunday. Serving as the designated hitter, Justin Justice knocked two hits including his 8th home run of the season.
