17th Rd Pick: TigsTown Q&A: Nathan Newman

Newman starred for Pepperdine

After starring for Pepperdine, is Nathan Newman ready to join the pro ranks as a member of the Detroit Tigers?

TigsTown: How does it feel to be drafted?

Nate Newman: Excellent, it's really a privilege.

TT: What about being drafted by the Detroit Tigers?

NN: I had no idea they were going to be drafting me, but I'm excited to be a part of the Tigers now.

TT: What other clubs were you hearing from before the draft?

NN: I was getting phone calls from lots of other teams, but I guess none of them wanted me as bad as the Tigers did.

TT: For those that didn't follow Pepperdine, tell Tigers' fans a little about how your 2009 season went.

NN: Well it didn't quite go as planned. We went into the season expecting we were going to be making a trip to Omaha, and obviously things didn't pan out that way.

TT: How about you personally?

NN: Again, didn't do as well as I had hoped. Had a rocky a few starts at the beginning of the season, it seemed like I had lost my mechanics. As the season went on it all came together, but it wasn't enough.

TT: Tell us about your skill-set and what pitches you feature.

NN: Well I've got a two seam fastball and a slider. Also sometimes when I've got two strikes I'll throw a 12-6 curve.

TT: Where does your fastball typically sit? And do you exclusively throw a two-seamer, or do you have a four-seamer as well?

NN: The two-seam fastball typically sits in the high 80's. I do occasionally throw a four-seamer, but it's more of a show-me pitch than something I regularly work with.

TT: What do you feel is your biggest strength at this point in your development?

NN: Definitely my competitive nature – about as competitive a person on the baseball field as you'll find.

TT: Where do you still feel you have to work to do?

NN: I'm still learning every single day. I only started pitching seriously in my last year of high school, so I feel like I still have a ton to learn, so I'm just always learning, every day.

TT: Have you had any conversations yet with the Tigers about a contract, and do you expect to sign?

NN: We're going to talk more on Monday. I think I'll most likely be flying out to somewhere in New York [Oneonta] at that point.

TT: Do you have a personal or professional goal as far as your baseball career is concerned?

NN: Win. Just win games and climb up the ladder.

TigsTown would like to thank Nathan for taking the time to speak with us, and wish him well on congratulate him on his recent selection!
