2012 Draft Scouting Report: Courtney Hawkins
Name: Courtney Hawkins Position: Outfield School: Carroll H.S. (Tex.) Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 210 Bats/Throws: R/R Events Scouted: PG National Showcase Physical Description Hawkins has a football player's body type. He's a fantastic plus athlete and is very physically mature. He'll add some weight as he matures, but what you see is mostly what you get. Hawkins is a true physical specimen. Hitting Plus bat speed is what has put Hawkins on the map. He has lightning fast hands. He hits from an outstanding base, using an aggressive load. That lower half is where his strength comes from at the plate. There are some moving parts he'll have to iron out, but his bat speed and decent plate discipline would indicate he can be a high average hitter at the professional level. Power Few players in the 2012 draft class show the type of easy power Hawkins displays. He's a 30 run bat in the making, and that's due to his big extension and easy lift in his swing. He's already driving the ball out to the middle of the field with ease and this power is translating well in game action. Fielding Right field looks like the long term home for Hawkins. He has plus wheels right now, but may lose a step as he gets older. But, it's the throwing arm that makes him an ideal fit in right. He has a true cannon in and shows pretty consistent on-line throws. Speed Currently a plus runner, Hawkins projects around a 55 on the 20-80 scale in the speed department. He's an outstanding athlete and will always have that hop in his step. Power will be his game, but he can help a team on the bases as well. Summation Scouts are always looking to fit a player into a big league profile. It's easy to do that with Hawkins. He's a highly athletic right-handed slugger with power that translates right now. There's some rough edges but it's very easy to see what Hawkins can be as a professional.
