Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook: 11/15

O'Neill: .368/.463/.397 line during the AFL

Mike O'Neill had two hits on the final day of 2012 AFL action, but Surprise was eliminated.

Results from game played Thursday, November 15.

Salt River 7 at Surprise 3

Surprise could not recover from an early hole as they fell to Salt River 7-3 at home. The loss on the last day of the regular season eliminated them from the West Division title and a spot in the Arizona Fall League finals.

Boone Whiting (L, 3-2) dug that hole for his squad, loading the bases at the start on a lead-off double and single followed by a stolen base and one-out free pass. For a moment it looked like the right-hander might slip out of the self-created fix he was in when he fanned his second batter of the frame. Instead, Whiting served up a grand slam to center. Another single ensued before the Rafters' number eight hitter went down swinging.

Whiting kicked off the second with another two of his eight strikeouts before allowing a single to left. The inning finished with a fly out to left. He was not as fortunate in the third when a lead-off single, stolen base, single combination resulted in another tally. Whiting finally retired the side in order in his fourth and final inning of work. Overall, he gave up five runs, earned, on seven hits and a base-on-balls in four. Whiting had eight strikeouts, one ground out and two fly outs on 71 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Mike O'Neill, in his usual lead-off slot for the Saguaros, singled twice in four at bats before being replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth. The left fielder's single came in his first at bat when he grounded one into left. He advanced to second on another single but that was it. O'Neill was the tail end of consecutive singles that opened the third. An unusual 7-5-4 double play squelched the scoring threat. O'Neill popped out to the shortstop in foul ground and flew out to left in his last two at bats.

Cody Stanley went hitless for his second straight game, going 0-for-3 with a walk. He started the second with a fly out to left then worked a base-on-balls that advanced a runner into scoring position in the fourth. The catcher and number six batter finished the day with a swinging K and again flying out to left.
