Daily Smoko: Tigers 0 Padres 6

Cashner shoved it down the Tigers throats.

The Tigers offense had literally almost nothing going against Padres starter Andrew Cashner, who was brilliant. Detroit starter Rick Porcello had problems of his own as he left the ball up only for San Diego hitters to take advantage. All together it was an ugly night for the Tigers. Staff writer Nick Shlain has some notes on the loss.

Rajai Davis singled into shallow center field in the sixth inning and that was the only hit by a player in a Detroit uniform all night. I'm not even mad, that's amazing. Davis stole second and third base and Ian Kinsler walked to set up first and third with one out for Miguel Cabrera in what was still a 2-0 game. Cabrera promptly grounded the first pitch fastball to third for an inning-ending double play. There were no other rallies. The Tigers wouldn't get another baserunner for the rest of the game. Andrew Cashner was spectacular in his one-hitter performance. He also struck out 11 while walking just two batters.

News and Notes

  • Rick Porcello was pretty meh on Friday night. He wasn't terrible, but he also didn't pitch particularly well. There are definitely a few pitches he threw to Chase Headley that he'd like to have back. Jedd Gyorko's triple in the first, which Don Kelly actually got glove on before crashing into the wall, was also on a hanging breaking pitch.

  • Andrew Cashner could do no wrong on Friday. None. He even singled at the plate and scored a run coming home from third running on contact on a one out grounder in the seventh.

  • Andrew Romine looks pretty good in the field to me still. I don't know, I don't have much to say about this game.

  • Cabrera has been in a mini-slump at the dish. He seems too content to pull the ball right now and that's not his game. Rod Allen, on the FSD telecast, pointed out the big man's shoulder flying open and his head pulling off the ball while the team was in Los Angeles. I'm sure he'll get going, but Cashner on Friday wasn't the guy to get your swing right against.

  • What else? What else happened? Something. Oh, Luke Putkonen pitched, I guess.

  • At least we can stop talking about how bad the bullpen is for one day because they got one hit. Not going to win many games that way.
