Tigers Acquire Washburn in 3 Player Deal

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to acquire left-handed staring pitcher Jarrod Washburn in exchange for left-handed starter Luke French and minor league left-hander Mauricio Robles.

Coming into Friday, it seemed unlikely that the Tigers were going to be real active before Friday's 4PM trade deadline.

But as always, things can change, and change in a hurry.

And a little before noon, word came out that the Tigers had agreed to trade for left-hander Jarrod Washburn in exchange for left-handers Luke French and Mauricio Robles.

The Tigers had been in search of a number of different fits for the club, with a left-handed starter being among the top needs, and Washburn among the top targets.

Washburn, 34, was 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA so far this season with the Mariners. Washburn's ERA was good for third in the American League, behind only Zack Greinke and new teammate Edwin Jackson.

Washburn will take Luke French's place in the rotation, who had stepped up recently to claim the fifth slot in the rotation. French was 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts (seven games total) for the Tigers so far this season. The 23-year old French had a career 3.88 minor league ERA and was an 8th round pick by the Tigers in 2004. French was TigsTown's 18th rated prospect in the organization.

The top prospect involved in the deal is Mauricio Robles, the hard throwing 20-year old lefty who had split time between Class-A West Michigan and High-A Lakeland this year. Robles has posted a 4.24 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings so far this year. TigsTown had Robles ranked 12th in the organization.

Stay tuned to TigsTown for more on the developments with this deal, as well as other potential deals as the 4PM trade deadline approaches.
